Point Cloud's 3D Images Provide 'Reel' Results for Orvis.com

Sales Increase Secures Agreement Extension for Point Cloud

Apr 23, 2001, 01:00 ET from Point Cloud, Inc.

    MINNEAPOLIS, April 23 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- Orvis(R)
online catalog is reporting a significant increase in sales of fishing reels
presented in 3D on Orvis.com. As a result, Orvis has decided to expand its 3D
efforts into other categories such as apparel. Consequently, Orvis has signed
an agreement extension with Point Cloud to continue providing 3D images that
enhance the online shopping experience and boost sales.
At the NRF.com show in September 2000, Point Cloud announced an agreement
with Orvis to quickly convert Orvis' product images in the areas of Fly
Fishing, Luggage and Home Furnishings into interactive 3D images. Orvis' goal
was to dramatically increase conversion rates on items using the 3D
technology. "We added Point Cloud's 3D images to our site to bring dimension
to our online catalog and enhance our customers' shopping experience," says
John Rogers, Director of E-Commerce Marketing for Orvis. "The resulting sales
have exceeded our expectations. We are expecting to see similar or better
 results in apparel."
During the 2000-2001 holiday season, the majority of Orvis products
presented in 3D experienced a significant increase in sales, particularly
those categories in which product detail is critical in the buying decision.
Orvis' experience with 3D images reinforces the findings of a recent
Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) survey on Web marketing. The PwC survey
discovered that the features most likely to increase purchases on a Web site
are tools that make the shopping experience more like the in-store experience
-- services such as zoom-in images, product reviews and in-stock status
 reports.
"People have been skeptical about the impact of 3D images on Web sites,
but we knew from our tests and customers that simulating the in-store
experience with 3D images could boost sales and decrease returns," says Point
Cloud CEO, Jeffrey Sugerman. "The Orvis sales results provide evidence of the
 power of 3D."
