Polytechnic University Selects CA's Unicenter TNG To Manage Network With New Wireless Connectivity Options

CA's Mobile eBusiness Solution to Provide

24 x 7 System Availability for Students and Faculty

    ISLANDIA, N.Y., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Computer Associates
International, Inc. (CA) today announced that Polytechnic University has
selected Unicenter TNG to manage its network, which will include new wireless
connectivity for students, faculty and administrators. Unicenter TNG will
enable Polytechnic to ensure 24x7 availability to its growing user population
without having to increase IS staff.
Because Polytechnic is a "commuter" school, large numbers of students
access the network via phone lines from their homes at all hours of the day
and night. This makes maintaining the health of network and remote access
infrastructure critical. Prior to deploying Unicenter TNG, it was difficult
for the school's IS staff to quickly determine the cause of problems that
 would interfere with student access.
Under an initiative that began last fall, all 500 incoming freshmen
received IBM laptop computers, greatly increasing the number of users on the
network. CA's Unicenter TNG allows the university IS department to manage
this growing number of users without increasing staff.
"Students rely on the network for Internet research and collaborative
projects with classmates, as well as for submitting homework and emailing
questions to faculty members," said Greg Smith, vice president of finance and
administration, Polytechnic. "That's why the optimized availability we are
gaining through our Unicenter TNG deployment is so critical to us."
Polytechnic recently implemented new wireless access capabilities to allow
students and faculty to communicate with each other and access networked
resources even more easily. The initiative will continue with each succeeding
class, so that by the fall of 2003, all undergraduates will have
wireless-enabled laptops -- effectively quadrupling the number of students
 with wireless access.
The school is one of only about 100 nationwide to deploy such wireless
 access for students and staff.
According to Pete DiGiacinto, project manager, Logicon, Inc., Unicenter
TNG has been instrumental in enabling the school to cope with growing
technology demands without adding to its technical staff. Logicon, Inc., a
wholly owned subsidiary of Northrop Grumman, manages Polytechnic's network.
"With the automated capabilities of Unicenter TNG, we can convert some of
our manpower from monitoring the network to direct support services for our
students, faculty and administration," said DiGiacinto. "This makes it a
 win-win situation."
DiGiacinto also lauded Unicenter TNG's advanced troubleshooting
capabilities. "In the past, if a problem occurred during off-hours, we'd have
to speculate and play detective to find it," he said. "Now, because Unicenter
TNG logs everything, we can review what events transpired and remedy the
 situation."
The graphical view of the network provided by Unicenter TNG makes it
possible for the IS staff at Polytechnic to not only spot bottlenecks, but
also proactively manage the system to assure that students, faculty and
administrators have ready and rapid access to the information they need.
"When you are doubling demands on the network, traffic will slow down,"
DiGiacinto added. "With Unicenter TNG, we can spot those potential problems
and get to them before they create serious service disruptions."
