Product for Preschoolers Fills Gap in Music Education Industry

    KNOXVILLE, Tenn., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- A product developed by a small
music store in Knoxville is filling a big gap in the world of music education.
The product, called Home Music School(TM), offers piano and keyboard lessons
to preschoolers -- an age group often overlooked in the current music
 education market.
Home Music School(TM) is a home-based program for children ages 3-6. It
was produced by the father-and-son team of Bill and Robert Jones at their
music store, Bill Jones Music, in Knoxville and consists of an animated video,
audiocassette, children's activity book and parent guidebook.
The program is divided into six lessons, featuring "Timmy Toucan" as he
teaches his best friend "Willie the Tropical Mammoth" piano lessons that the
parent will later teach to the child.
"To be successful with piano or keyboard lessons, young children need
daily repetition," explains Robert Jones. "That, and a limited attention
span, are the reasons why most piano teachers prefer to start teaching
children around age seven. Home Music School(TM) overcomes these obstacles.
The animation is capable of keeping a child's attention much longer than
traditional lessons. It also allows the child to learn at his own pace by
reviewing the material until it is mastered," Jones added. "Children also
learn that music lessons can be fun."
The Joneses first saw a need for such a product a few years ago, when
several international studies defined positive effects of piano and keyboard
lessons on preschool-age children. Through piano lessons, preschoolers
develop patience, self-discipline and dexterity and enhance intellectual
development in spatial-temporal and abstract reasoning and cognitive
 processes.
"We talked with parents and grandparents almost every day who wanted to
start their preschool-age children in some sort of piano or keyboard lesson
program," explains Bill Jones. "At the time there was no such program
available, so we rolled up our sleeves and went to work."
In developing Home Music School(TM), the Joneses worked with numerous
piano teachers, music educators, computer animators, as well as child
development experts and medical professionals, who provided attention to the
physical and developmental limitations of children this age.
"We're helping families give the joy and benefits of piano lessons to
their children," said Bill Jones. "Knowing that, I feel like Home Music
School(TM) is already an incredible success."
