PRWeek Honors Pharmacia and Thomson Financial/Carson For The Pharmacia-Monsanto Merger Campaign

Apr 02, 2001, 01:00 ET from Thomson Financial/Carson

NEW YORK, April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Pharmacia's investor relations campaign,
developed in conjunction with Thomson Financial/Carson, was selected as
PRWeek's "Investor/Financial Relations Campaign of the Year 2001." The award,
based on the merger campaign for the Pharmacia-Monsanto merger, was announced
in PRWeek's annual awards issue that highlights the best PR campaigns in
19 categories. Craig Tooman, Vice President of Investor Relations, accepted
the award on behalf of Pharmacia.
The Pharmacia-Monsanto merger, first announced in December 1999, was
initially met with shareholder opposition and concern from stock analysts and
the media, according to the PRWeek description of the award. By the time the
merger vote was taken on March 24, 2000 following the implementation of
Pharmacia's and Thomson Financial/Carson's investor relations strategy, 94% of
Pharmacia and Monsanto shareholders approved the merger. In addition, the
merger earned the support of important industry analysts.
Bill Sherman, Executive Vice President, at Thomson Financial/Carson,
attributes much of the change in sentiment to education. "Initially, the
merger was simply misunderstood by the investment community," said
Mr. Sherman. "In addition to providing merger analysis, our job centered
around helping Pharmacia to clearly communicate the benefits of the merger.
The shareholder vote was validation of our work. On a personal note, it's
been a real pleasure working with Craig Tooman on this initiative and many
others that have contributed to Pharmacia's success over the last 4 years."
Thomson Financial/Carson's work on the Pharmacia-Monsanto merger also
included perception studies, investor targeting, market surveillance and
preparing company senior management for an international road show. Since the
merger, Pharmacia has become the highest ranked pharmaceutical company on Wall
Street. Pharmacia is one of the top pharmaceutical companies in terms of
 shareholder returns.
