Rackspace Calls in the 'Exterminator' to Eliminate Network Attacks

Security-Conscious Hosting Company Rolls Out New Intrusion Detection System

May 01, 2001, 01:00 ET from Rackspace Managed Hosting

SAN ANTONIO, May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Rackspace Managed Hosting, a leading
provider of managed Internet hosting services, today announced the rollout of
its latest innovation in data security for its customers, dubbed
 "Exterminator".
Exterminator is a new Intrusion Detection System (IDS) that continuously
monitors the network in Rackspace's Texas data center for any signs of
malicious activity. When an attack attempt is detected, Exterminator's
proprietary software acts to prevent any communication between the targeted
host and the attacker, rendering the attempt unsuccessful. Rackspace will
also implement the system in its European data center in London, England, this
summer to ensure that anyone trying to attack one of the data centers will be
 banned from both.
Exterminator is Rackspace's second major security innovation in as many
months. Last month Rackspace released its "Alamo" antidote to the deadly
Linux cracker weapon Knark. Alamo has been downloaded by more than 600 Linux
 users to date.
"What sets Exterminator apart from other, more traditional systems
utilized by colocation facilities and virtual and shared hosters is that the
servers on our side can still see the attempted attack, but no data will be
sent back to the attacker," said Paul Froutan, general manager of technology
for Rackspace. "This means that our customers are aware of the attempt and,
more importantly, their servers remain protected."
The new IDS is an additional safeguard that enhances the benefits of the
other security precautions that Rackspace provides, such as managed firewalls
from Cisco and Netscreen. It is free of charge to all customers.
"Since day one, the security of our customers' servers has been of
paramount importance, and we are always on the lookout for ways to make our
systems more secure," said Graham Weston, chief executive officer of
Rackspace. "To maintain a 93% customer satisfaction rate, we do what it takes
to protect our customers, and we ultimately aim to make the Internet a safer
 place."
