BELL GARDENS, Calif., April 11 /PRNewswire/ -- It's the kind of thing that
shouldn't happen to anyone. However, the startling truth is that over
100 women a day are sexually assaulted in California alone. It's this truth
that brought about The Rape Abuse Incest National Network (RAINN) in 1994 and
has helped more than 405,000 victims of sexual assault.
RAINN is a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. operating
America's only national hotline for victims of sexual assault. The hotline --
1-800-656-HOPE offers free, confidential counseling and support 24 hours a
day, from anywhere in the country.
The month of April is designated SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH throughout
the country. In its continuing effort to raise awareness and support
survivors of sexual assault, RAINN will hold its First Annual Southern
California RAINN AWARDS on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at The Bicycle Casino in
Bell Gardens. This ceremony will honor rape crisis centers throughout the
Southland and is made possible due to the generosity of the L.A. Casinos
Consortium and worldwide security leader ADT Security Services Inc.
The Master of Ceremonies is the chairman of the RAINN National Legal
Advisory Board and leading expert in the field of sexual assault survivors'
legal rights, California attorney Mark A. Kelegian of Kelegian & Associates.
The event is being hosted by The Bicycle Casino and a crowd of approximately
200 advocates, forensic nurses and other leaders in the fight against sexual
 assault will be in attendance.
RAINN benefits from widespread celebrity support including Tori Amos,
Sarah McLachlan, Hootie & The Blowfish, Collective Soul, Dru Hill, R.E.M.,
Natalie Merchant, Jewel, Sheryl Crow, The Dave Matthews Band, U2,
Ani DeFranco, Paul Shaffer, Jennifer Aniston, Jennie Garth, Jamie Walters and
 Michael J. Fox.
In addition to receiving their Outstanding Partner Award, the centers will
hear from a distinguished panel of guest speakers including Los Angeles County
Deputy District Attorney Peter Berman, who heads the office's Sexual Crimes
division, Assistant Director Mary Beth Roden from the Rape Treatment Center at
Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Judith
Chirlin, and Kay Buck from the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault.
