Ralphs Club Members Can Earn Free Movie Tickets

Apr 17, 2001, 01:00 ET from Ralphs Grocery Company

    LOS ANGELES, April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Ralphs, California's first
supermarket chain, is also first in California with free tickets to one of
this summer's most-anticipated movies. Ralphs has partnered with DreamWorks
SKG to allow its shoppers to earn free movie tickets to the computer-animated
comedy "Shrek"(TM) based on their grocery purchases over a four-week period.
From April 18 to May 15, Ralphs customers who accumulate $300 in grocery
purchases using their Ralphs Club Card will earn two free tickets
(adult matinee or child admission) to "Shrek," which opens May 18, 2001 in
theaters around the country. The free tickets may be used at any theater
showing "Shrek" from May 18 to June 7.
The "Shrek" promotion will be supported by television commercials, radio
and print ads, direct mail, in-store point-of-sale and online support.
"This special promotion is a great way to reward our loyal customers who
use their Ralphs Club Card in our stores," said Chuck Ackerman, Senior Vice
President of Sales and Marketing for Ralphs.
Starring the voices of Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey),
Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona) and John Lithgow (Lord Farquaad), the irreverent
comedy "Shrek" tells the tale of a cynical, no-nonsense ogre named Shrek whose
swamp is overrun by annoying fairytale creatures -- the usual mice, pigs and
wolves that plague storybooks everywhere. In an attempt to save his home,
Shrek sets out to confront Lord Farquaad, ruler of Duloc, who has banished all
the fairytale misfits from Duloc in order to create his own perfect world.
Along the way, Shrek is befriended by a wise-cracking donkey, sent to slay a
fire-breathing dragon and save a beautiful princess. In the end, he learns to
love and be loved in this comedy from computer animation wizards at
 PDI/DreamWorks (Antz).
In addition to free movie tickets, all Ralphs stores will offer customers
an assortment of "Shrek" licensed merchandise, including toys, candy products,
digital watches and sunglasses, and a variety of hats. Many stores also will
offer a variety of other "Shrek"-themed products and services, including
"Shrek" cookies, cakes and cupcakes at store bakeries.
As part of the promotion, each Ralphs store also will hold a
"Shrek"-themed coloring contest in which children age 11 and younger will have
the opportunity to win an action figure of Toy Dragon, a main character in the
 movie.
"'Shrek' promises to be this summer's most innovative, witty movie. We
are confident that Ralphs shoppers of all ages will be charmed by 'Shrek,'"
said Ackerman. "Ralphs has enjoyed a successful relationship with DreamWorks
and we are excited to be partnering with them again on 'Shrek.'"
The "Shrek" promotion is part of an ongoing partnership between Ralphs and
DreamWorks. Previous Ralphs Club/DreamWorks movie ticket promotions included
the popular animated film "Chicken Run," which packed theaters last summer,
and "The Road to El Dorado," which attracted crowds of moviegoers last spring.
"This will be the biggest supermarket promotion of any kind to date," said
Anne Globe, Head of DreamWorks Consumer Products Marketing and National
Promotions. "Ralphs customer base is an ideal match with our target 'Shrek'
moviegoer of families and kids. We worked closely together to co-develop a
completely unique promotion and merchandise plan bringing the movie to life in
 their stores."
Ralphs' parent company, The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR), also will offer a
"Shrek" free movie ticket promotion at more than 2,000 of its other
 supermarkets across the country.

DreamWorks SKG was formed in October 1994 by its three principal partners
-- Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen -- to produce
live-action motion pictures; animated feature films; network, syndicated and
 cable television programming, home video entertainment; records, books; toys;
 and consumer products.

Ralphs Club Card members enjoy savings on thousands of items throughout
the store in addition to discounts on many popular activities and consumer
services. Applications for Ralphs Club Cards are available at all Ralphs
supermarkets. Applying for a card is easy. Customers simply present a
completed application to a cashier, receive a card on the spot, and the
 savings will begin immediately.
