LAS VEGAS, April 23 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- Rob Glaser, Chairman and CEO of RealNetworks(R), Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK), today announced a new corporate initiative to donate one billion Internet advertising impressions in the next year for public service announcements (PSAs) to catalyze public support behind a global effort to stop the spread of AIDS and care for the millions who suffer from the disease. Mr. Glaser made the announcement in a keynote address he delivered today at the National Association of Broadcasters conference in Las Vegas. In his remarks, Glaser cited the social impact that traditional broadcasters have had through public service campaigns on issues like drunk driving and drug use, and he said the Internet now makes it possible to take such campaigns global -- while simultaneously giving individuals a way to take direct action. Glaser invited traditional broadcasters and other partners to join RealNetworks in launching the first-ever global PSA campaign to span across mediums as well as borders. "The AIDS crisis is truly a global issue: its effects extend well beyond the borders of the most stricken nations. Our announcement today is a first step - to catalyze more public service commitments from the broadcasting industry, and to highlight the Internet's unique ability to empower individual action on global issues," said Glaser. "With this initiative we hope to harness the Internet's worldwide reach and mobilize people to take action and address the AIDS epidemic, which is ravaging the lives of millions." RealNetworks' pledge will enable more than 85 million monthly impressions of online PSAs in a variety of formats, from banner ads to buttons and pre-roll streaming ads, through RealNetworks' RealPlayer and its Web properties. The magnitude of the commitment makes it one of the most ambitious online public service campaigns ever undertaken. The PSAs will be designed to educate viewers and listeners about the spread of AIDS and issue a call to action, urging additional support and assistance. Today's announcement builds on the Company's commitment since its inception to use the Internet to deliver messages of broad social consequence. Since 1996, RealNetworks has donated millions of ad impressions to nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations through its RealImpact division. Last October, the company also launched the RealNetworks Foundation, which is dedicated to empowering new voices through technology, broadening access to technology, and enhancing the quality of life in the communities where RealNetworks operates.
