Foodservice Packaging: Bulk & Portion Control

US demand to climb 2.3% annually through 2014

US demand for foodservice packaging is forecast to climb 2.3 percent per year to nearly $8 billion in 2014. Growth will be driven by rising disposable personal income levels and expanding foodservice revenues as consumers continue to favor convenient, ready-to-eat foods that provide a change of pace from meals prepared at home.

Flexible foodservice packaging to outpace

rigid Flexible packaging demand will outpace rigid packaging, expanding nearly three percent per annum to $3.6 billion in 2014. Gains will be bolstered by cost, convenience and performance advantages over rigid containers. In addition, as sustainability and environmental concerns continue to be important issues in all areas of the packaging industry, they will support demand for flexible foodservice packaging, being that packaging occupies less space in landfills and consumes less material than rigid alternatives. Pouches are expected to post the fastest gains of all flexible foodservice packaging types, with growth often coming at the expense of metal cans. Bags and sacks will remain the dominant flexible packaging format in foodservice uses.

Corrugated boxes to support rigid packaging segment

Rigid foodservice packaging demand is expected to increase less than two percent per year to $4.4 billion in 2014. Gains will be limited by loss of share to flexible alternatives, as well as a moderation in materials pricing, particularly in metal cans. However, growth will be supported by the widespread use of corrugated boxes as shipping containers for a broad range of food items. In addition, demand will be bolstered by healthy gains for plastic containers as a result of heightened use of single-serving plastic condiment containers, which are making inroads at the expense of portion control pouches.

Specialty processed food uses to register fastest gains

Fruits and vegetables; meat, poultry, seafood and eggs; and baked goods were the three leading applications for foodservice packaging in 2009, together accounting for over 60 percent of demand. Through 2014, foodservice packaging utilized in specialty processed food applications will register the most rapid gains based on the increasing importance of pre-made food items that can speed food preparation, reduce labor costs and give the appearance of being made from scratch. In addition, increasing use of more costly rigid plastic condiment containers will boost value gains in specialty processed food applications.

Restaurants among best market opportunities

Eating and drinking places accounted for more than three-quarters of foodservice packaging demand in 2009. Of these establishments, restaurants other than quick service types will post the fastest growth as a result of good prospects for fast casual restaurants and snack/bakery/ coffee shops. Demand for packaging used by quick service restaurants will be supported by their high usage of portion control products and prepackaged items.

Study coverage

This new industry study presents historical demand data (1999, 2004 and 2009) plus forecasts for 2014 and 2019 by foodservice packaging product (rigid, flexible), application (e.g., fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry, baked goods) and end user (e.g., eating and drinking places). In addition, the study considers key market environment factors, discusses strategic and competitive variables, and profiles 40 competitors in the US foodservice packaging industry, including Bemis, Silgan and International Paper.
