Robatel Technologies, LLC Contracts with WCS To Provide Type B Radioactive Waste Transport Casks

Apr 17, 2012, 13:29 ET from Robatel Technologies, LLC

ROANOKE, Va., April 17, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Robatel Technologies LLC today announced it has executed a contract with Waste Control Specialists (WCS), a subsidiary of Valhi, Inc. (NYSE: VHI), to provide at least two Robatel Model RT-100 Type B radioactive waste transport casks. The Robatel casks will allow WCS to overcome an industry shortage of Type B transport casks for the transport of Class B and C low-level radioactive waste.  WCS operates the United States newest radioactive waste disposal facility in Andrews County Texas.

"There simply are not enough of these specially designed, highly-engineered casks in the country to support the needs of the universities, research centers and power generating utilities that generate these wastes, particularly now that the Texas Compact facility offers them a new readily accessible disposal option," said William J. Lindquist, CEO of WCS.  "Robatel has been collaborating extensively with my staff to define the performance criteria for the RT-100 to ensure it meets the needs of our clients."

"Robatel is pleased to put our 60 years of experience designing and fabricating Type B radioactive material storage and transport casks to work for WCS by constructing these new containers.  Our casks are engineered and fabricated to meet or exceed the design, testing, use and maintenance regulations of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission," said Teo Grochowski, CEO of Robatel Technologies, LLC.  "While our design engineering is headquartered in Roanoke, VA we will draw extensively on the experience and legacy knowledge within the Robatel Group of companies headquartered in the suburbs of Lyon, France."  As a result of the contract, Robatel will immediately relocate to an expanded office facility and increase staff.

Some key features of the new RT-100 cask include:

  • New design for the 21st century incorporating the latest in regulatory guidance, materials engineering and design know-how.
  • Offers one of the largest volumes of any Type B radioactive waste transport cask currently on the market or before the U.S. NRC for approval.
  • Versatile – engineered to carry multiple liner designs.
  • 100 percent stainless steel interior and exterior.  Not subject to corrosion as existing carbon steel models.
  • Proprietary multiple sealing gaskets to maintain seal integrity during normal or accident situations.
