Ryland Announces a 25% Increase in Quarterly Unit Sales For the Period Ended March 31, 2001

    CALABASAS, Calif., April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ryland Group (NYSE:   RYL)
 today released preliminary unit net orders for the month of March 2001, and
 the quarter ended March 31, 2001.
     New orders for the month of March 2001 were 1,526, a 16 percent increase
 over the 1,313 new orders reported for the month of March 2000.
     New orders for the first quarter of 2001 were 3,970, a 25 percent increase
 over the same quarter in 2000, representing the highest quarterly sales in the
 Company's history.
     Additionally, the Company's backlog increased 23 percent to 5,757
 outstanding contracts, representing the highest quarter-end backlog in the
 Company's history.
