Ryland Names Jon Werner President Of Ryland Homes' Southern California Division

    CALABASAS, Calif., April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ryland Group (NYSE:   RYL)
 today announced that Jon Werner has been named president of Ryland Homes'
 Southern California division.  Jon has more than 22 years' experience in the
 homebuilding industry and in building successful homebuilding ventures in the
 Southern California market.  He succeeds Mike Forsum who has moved to the Bay
 Area as Ryland Homes' Northern California division president.
     "Jon has extraordinary talent, experience and expertise in the Southern

     Prior to joining Ryland, Werner has held top positions at Pacific Scene,
 Kaufman & Broad, and UDC Homes.  During his 13 years with Pacific Scene, Inc.,
 Werner held a variety of positions, including president of the San Diego and
 Arizona divisions and ultimately became president of the homebuilding
 organization.  Werner was responsible for the successful development and sale
 of more than 10,000 homes and condominiums, land acquisition and development,
 customer service, product design and advertising.
     Werner was a member of the San Diego Mayor's Housing Advisory Council, the
 Carlsbad Mayor's Affordable Housing Advisory Committee and the board of the
 Mission Valley Y.M.C.A.
     Werner earned his bachelor's degree from the University of the Pacific in
 Stockton, Calif.  He also holds a master's degree from San Diego State
 University.  He and his wife, Judy, live in Encinitas, Calif., and have two
 daughters.
