Safeway took the extraordinary steps last summer to help ease the energy
situation by dimming the lights in all of its 550 plus Safeway and Vons stores
throughout the state. Safeway is also working to help motivate Californians
to conserve energy by providing helpful tips on its paper bags, weekly
newspaper inserts, in-store announcements and radio ads. The public service
messages were provided by the State of California's "Flex Your Power" program.
"Energy conservation is not new to Safeway and Vons," commented
Larree Renda, Executive Vice President. "For many years, reduction in energy
consumption and energy conservation have been a focus for Safeway. As one of
the largest employers in the state, Safeway will continue to play its part in
 promoting responsible energy practices."
Safeway has replaced inefficient lighting systems with
state-of-the-art energy efficient fluorescent lamps and electronic ballasts,
worked with PG&E and Southern California Edison in testing and evaluating the
most efficient cooking and refrigeration technologies and installed modern
energy management systems in all of its new and remodeled stores. In
addition, Safeway has asked all its suppliers to focus on energy efficiency.
Safeway operates over 250 stores in its Northern California division
including Hawaii and Western Nevada and more than 370 stores under the Vons
and Pavilions banners in its Vons division in Southern California and Nevada.
Safeway Inc. is a Fortune 50 company and one of the largest food and drug
retailers in North America based upon annualized sales of approximately
$33 billion. The company operates over 1,700 stores in the United States and
 Canada.
