Sanchez Makes Its High-Performance GT.M Database Source Code Available as Open Source Free Software on x86 GNU/Linux

Jun 18, 2001, 01:00 ET from Sanchez Computer Associates Inc.

    MALVERN, Pa., June 18 /PRNewswire/ --
Sanchez Computer Associates Inc. (Nasdaq: SCAI) announced it has made
available the source code for the company's M database technology (GT.M(TM))
under the GNU Public License as open source free software operating on the
 x86 GNU/Linux platform. GT.M, a high-performance, multi-paradigm database
application platform, provides the transaction processing power for Sanchez'
PROFILE(R) suite of integrated banking and brokerage applications for
 financial institutions.
Sanchez released GT.M's source code for its x86 GNU/Linux version as an
open source, third-party application in May at the M User Group Deutschland
Jahrestagung 2001 meeting in Pliezhausen, Germany. In November 2000, Sanchez
announced the availability of a binary release of GT.M as GNU/Linux open
 source free software.
"Today's source code announcement completes the process we began with GT.M
and x86 GNU/Linux last year," said K.S. Bhaskar, vice president of business
development for platforms and technologies at Sanchez. "By licensing GT.M's
database technology and programming source code as free software on the
GNU/Linux platform, we gain a very active group of worldwide programmers and
testing resources, who, while working on their own behalf, will improve the
product and take ownership in the software's future. While Sanchez receives a
more robust product, we also give something back to the software community."
The source code and third-party application are available on Source Forge
at http://sourceforge.net/projects/sanchez-gtm. A copy of the GT.M CD may be
obtained by sending a request to gtminfo@sanchez-gtm.com. The collection of
open source GT.M applications includes Aida, a relational (SQL) engine for a
 GT.M database with an ODBC/JDBC driver and a Java GUI using the Swing classes;
Visual GT.M, a set of Borland Delphi custom controls for accessing a GT.M
database with GT.M code to serve the controls, and a CGI interface, which is
the same GT.M interface used to implement the online registration for the
 M User Group Deutschland meeting.
"Releasing GT.M as open source software is one of the most important steps
taken in the M community in a decade," said Richard Walters, a computer
science professor at the University of California, leader of the Free M
project and author of several books on M. "Sanchez is the first commercial
implementer of the M standard willing to release, not only an executable
version of M software, but the original source code."
"For years, M has been the de facto standard for informatics in the
healthcare industry as well as a major player in several other industries.
Sanchez' decision puts M in the same ballpark as other open source efforts
such as Perl and Linux. It also paves the way for wider acceptance of M in
the computer science community," Walters explained.
