Schlumberger RMS Expands Information Services Contract With Puget Sound Energy

Expansion Will Position 70,000 New Consumers With Real-Time Energy Management

Capabilities

Apr 19, 2001, 01:00 ET from Schlumberger Resource Management Services Inc.

NORCROSS, Ga., April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Schlumberger Resource Management
Services Inc. (RMS), a business segment of Schlumberger Ltd (NYSE: SLB),
announced today an agreement with Bellevue, Wash.-based Puget Sound Energy,
the utility subsidiary of Puget Energy (NYSE: PSD), to expand the existing
Network Meter Information Services Agreement to cover an additional 70,000 gas
and electric consumers, bringing the total number of communication points
under contract to 1,395,000, or about 95 percent of PSE's customer meters.
The information services agreement is based on the Schlumberger CellNet(R)
wireless fixed network for data communications, the largest and fastest
growing network meter reading (NMR) system in the utility industry. The
network, coupled with Schlumberger advanced information services and
ConsumerLinX(TM), the customer information system developed by Puget Sound
Energy subsidiary ConneXt(R), provides the technology, information and
expertise needed to make Puget Sound Energy's Personal Energy Management
program possible. This expansion means that 70,000 additional consumers will
have the capability to participate in the ground-breaking Personal Energy
 Management program.
The Schlumberger technology remotely captures high volumes of real-time
consumption information, which is used to provide timely on-line feedback of
energy usage patterns to PSE customers via an application branded Personal
Energy Management. The aim of the Personal Energy Management program is to
demonstrate how households and businesses can benefit themselves and the
environment by shifting some electricity use away from the hours when overall
demand for power -- and its wholesale price -- peak each day.
The real-time energy management program for consumers is only one of the
many advanced service offerings Schlumberger will be rolling out to customers
 this year.
"Schlumberger is providing PSE with unparalleled levels of information,
convenience, and energy management capabilities needed to establish
interactive relationships with customers and to run its business efficiently,"
said Brad Kitterman, president, Schlumberger RMS North America. "Schlumberger
is partnering with a growing number of utilities to build an efficient energy
information community that will provide real energy choices to consumers."

Puget Sound Energy is the first utility in the country to use a state-of-
the-art customer information system coupled with a two-way, real-time wireless
communications network to allow hundreds of thousands of consumers -- from
households to businesses -- to access information about their energy
consumption and match it against the cost to produce that energy.
PSE calls this initiative Personal Energy Management. PEM helps
customers use their consumption information to move more of their electric
usage to the off-peak, less expensive times of the day. This has the added
benefit of reducing the peak demands placed on the PSE and regional electric
systems, reducing the need to purchase expensive peak power on the wholesale
market and keeping customer costs lower. In the long run, the result is less
need to build new power plants and more efficient utilization of those already
 in place.
