SAN DIEGO, April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- For its role in helping STAPLES Center
win the prestigious Pollstar "Arena of the Year" award, founding partner
Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE) and its subsidiary, Sempra Energy Solutions, have
been recognized by the Los Angeles Arena Company.
As the official energy company of STAPLES Center, Sempra Energy Solutions
manages the energy needs of the award-winning venue.
Pollstar Magazine, a trade publication for the venue and concert industry,
annually recognizes its "Arena of the Year." STAPLES Center captured the 2001
title from New York's Madison Square Garden, the recipient for the past six
 years in a row.
"We are proud to be a founding partner of STAPLES Center and congratulate
all those involved in making it a premiere venue," said Bob Dickerman,
president of Sempra Energy Solutions. "The energy infrastructure, advanced
technology and facilities management strategies we have employed at this arena
should serve as a role model for future arenas."
At STAPLES Center, Sempra Energy Solutions' team of technicians works
around the clock sustaining ambient temperature controls, maintaining
electrical and plumbing systems, and monitoring elevators, escalators and
ventilation fans to ensure that the capacity crowd of 18,000 has a comfortable
 visit.
Supplying electrical energy to more than 14,000 light fixtures, Sempra
Energy Solutions has powered many prestigious events held at STAPLES Center,
including the 2000 Democratic National Convention, the 42nd Annual Grammy
Awards and numerous concerts and sporting events. The infrastructure and
parts used to service the arena represent the most efficient, state-of-the-art
 equipment available.
"We went to great lengths to find an energy company that would be the
right fit for the arena," said Michael Roth, STAPLES Center's director of
communications. "Our extensive research confirmed Sempra Energy's exclusivity
in the energy category, which then made our decision easy. After working with
a dedicated group of professional engineers and company representatives for
several years now, it's evident that Sempra Energy is the perfect fit for
 STAPLES Center."
STAPLES Center is also home to five Los Angeles sports teams, including
the Los Angeles Kings hockey team. Sempra Energy Solutions maintains the ice
floor, providing nearly nine miles of chilling coil and 3,000 tons of cooling
capacity to cool it. Sempra Energy Solutions also has responsibility for
backup generators that will allow the arena's electricity to function in case
of an emergency or external power failure.
Shortly before STAPLES Center opened to the public in 1999, Sempra Energy
Solutions recommended installing pony chillers for after-hours cooling of the
arena. This helps STAPLES Center conserve energy and save money by
eliminating the need to depend on the larger cooling machines used during
operating hours, which also increases the longevity of the more expensive
 equipment.
"It's been a great working relationship from a STAPLES perspective," said
Lee Zeidman, senior vice president of operations for STAPLES Center. Zeidman
and his team said they are particularly impressed with the operating engineers
Sempra Energy Solutions hired specifically to run the energy operations at the
arena. "The personnel I work with are highly skilled and knowledgeable,
providing cost-cutting, efficient solutions for our energy needs."
As the official energy company of STAPLES Center, Sempra Energy's
corporate brand identity is displayed throughout the arena on internal and
external billboards. During sporting events, STAPLES Center Factoids are
displayed, including facts and figures relating to energy usage in the arena,
which are attributed to Sempra Energy.
Sempra Energy Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sempra Energy,
offers commercial and industrial businesses outsourcing services that help
them drive efficiencies in the ever changing energy environment. The company
offers its customers an integrated mix of services such as facility
management, supply and price risk management, energy efficiency, energy asset
management, infrastructure ownership, and information and billing services.
Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE), based in San Diego, is a Fortune 500 energy
services holding company with 12,000 employees, annual revenues of nearly $7
billion, and more than 9 million customers in the United States, Europe,
Canada, Mexico, South America and Asia.
