MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 23 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ --
SGI (NYSE: SGI) and Thirdspace today announced a new VOD server, targeting the
on-demand and interactive television services being built by
telecommunications companies, cable companies and the hospitality markets. The
SGI(TM) VOD server employs Thirdspace(TM) OVS (formerly Oracle Video Server),
the market leading MPEG video server software, and the robust, scalable
SGI(TM) Origin(TM) family of servers and storage. The new platform allows the
capture, storage and streaming of broadcast-standard digital video in a highly
 robust, scalable and cost-effective manner.
The SGI VOD server is already being used to power on-demand solutions from
Minerva Networks, Orca Interactive, MindPort and iMagicTV. All of these
solutions enable telcos, cable companies and others to retain customers and
increase revenues by delivering broadcast and on-demand television, email,
Internet and commerce to homes. Thirdspace will also deploy the SGI VOD server
as part of its interactive TV solution.
The SGI(TM) Origin(TM) 3000 series revolutionary, modular and
cost-effective SGI(TM) NUMA architecture, running on SGI's powerful IRIX
operating system, will be instrumental in enhancing telecommunications
companies' DSL investments and future growth. SGI's partnerships and alliances
with the world's leading telecommunications hardware and software developers
and network infrastructure providers will ensure rapid worldwide adoption and
deployment of the SGI VOD server platform.
"SGI has developed a strong network of interactive television solution
providers during the past three years. This new relationship with Thirdspace
enables us to optimize and enhance a proven foundation for a VOD solution and
to offer our customers a choice of fully supported network interfaces, set-top
boxes and iTV applications for immediate deployment," said Greg Estes, vice
president and general manager, Telecommunications and Media, SGI.
"The release of Thirdspace OVS on the SGI platform is an important step in
our plan to build upon OVS' established market leadership," says
Brian Keating, CEO, Thirdspace. "The SGI VOD server, powered by Thirdspace
OVS, will set the technical and commercial benchmarks for on-demand and
 interactive television services worldwide."
The SGI VOD server is also available from network infrastructure providers
such as Alcatel, Lucent and Nortel. SGI will continue to service and support
its worldwide customer installed base of the product previously known as
Oracle Video Server. SGI will provide professional consulting services and
24 x 7 hardware and software support services worldwide.
