SGI DMediaPro DM3 Greatly Expands Digital Media Capabilities Of SGI 3000 Family

SGI Onyx 3000 Series and SGI Origin 3000 Series Servers Now Optimized

For Robust, High-Performance Film Mastering, Effects and Broadcast Graphics

Apr 23, 2001, 01:00 ET from SGI

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 23 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ --
SGI (NYSE: SGI) today announced the introduction of DMediaPro(TM) DM3, a
 single-card high-definition (HD) and standard-definition (SD) video I/O option
for the SGI(TM) Onyx(R) 3000 series high-performance graphics systems and
 SGI(TM) Origin(TM) 3000 series high-performance servers. SGI(TM) DMediaPro DM3
enables customers in markets such as broadcasting, post-production, film and
government to take advantage of the scalable computing and high-bandwidth
SGI(TM) NUMA architecture available in the SGI(TM) 3000 family. DMediaPro DM3
for the SGI 3000 family optimizes state-of-the-art film mastering, digital
dailies, editing, multistream HD compositing and image analysis.
DMediaPro DM3 is a single expansion card and Video Breakout Box (VBOB)
that supports the input and output of multiple uncompressed HD and SD formats.
 User-selectable, real-time, high-quality colorspace conversion during input
and output supports capture and playback of up to 10-bit RGBA 4:4:4:4 or
YCrCbA 4:2:2:4 digital video sampling to and from disk.
Because SGI DMediaPro DM3 supports both HD and SD on a single-option card
and includes a serial digital interface, the cost of a solution based on an
SGI Origin 3000 series server or an SGI Onyx 3000 series system is greatly
lessened. SMPTE 292M- and SMPTE 259M-compliant, the SGI 3000 family with DM3
is capable of routing data up to 2K, and multiple streams of HD or SD video
are supported in a single board, providing unmatched compositing capability.
The configurable SGI Origin 3000 series provides power and resiliency for
intensive computation, extensive archiving and storage capabilities,
integrated graphics and high-performance I/O for media streaming. In addition
to DMediaPro DM3, SGI Onyx 3000 series systems can be equipped with the SGI HD
graphics-to-video output (GVO) option, which provides high-definition or
standard-definition video output directly from the graphics engine, enabling
real-time interactive graphics for broadcast television and other purposes.
"DMediaPro DM3 delivers the lower cost, enhanced flexibility and
functionality our customers have been asking for. With the introduction of
DMediaPro DM3, it is now possible to deliver digital film dailies using the
same tools that you would already be using for the universal film mastering
process," said Greg Estes, vice president and general manager,
 Telecommunications and Media, SGI.

What Customers and Providers Are Saying
Industry-leading digital media solution providers such as Discreet,
Interactive Effects, SGO Jaleo, Mathematical Technologies Inc. (MTI), vi[z]rt
and Kaydara continue to support innovative SGI DMediaPro digital
media-enhanced systems by releasing their own DMediaPro DM3 certified
 solutions.
"Discreet's support for the SGI Origin 3000 series and SGI Onyx 3000
series running inferno and fire with DMediaPro DM3 offers HD and SD on a
single card-delivering reliability and cutting-edge technology power," said
Louis Girardin, product manager for advanced editing and effects systems,
Discreet. "The wide spectrum of solutions covered by the SGI 3000 family
ranges from digital cinema, DTV and standard television. The SGI 3000 family
is the best offering for HD and film effects houses. Building on its strong
roots, the SGI 3000 family raises the bar once again. Whether for its
real-time HD graphics or its NUMAflex concept, the SGI 3000 family in
combination with DMediaPro DM3 is the recommended platform of choice."
"For creating a digital media backbone, the SGI Onyx 3000 series with
DMediaPro DM3 provides a solid solution for midsize facilities looking to grow
their compute facilities around a reliable server and workstation solution,"
said Tom Benoist, president, Interactive Effects, the developers of Piranha
HD. "As an example, one of our customers has managed to do full HD editing on
two processors while scientists made use of seven other processors for
 intensive rendering."
"The SGI Onyx 3000 series with DMediaPro DM3 makes it possible for SGO to
demonstrate at NAB the first real-time, multistream HD online system in the
world-the SGI Onyx 3000 series system running Jaleo Software," said Nicholas
Recagno, Jaleo general manager, SGO Holding Company. "Harnessing the power of
SGI NUMA architecture, the prototype Jaleo for the SGI Onyx 3000 series is
capable of editing across multiple streams of 1080i in real-time, as well as a
great number of effects such as dissolves, wipes, chroma key, interpolated
time warps, primary and secondary color correction, universal mastering and
more. We are very excited to bring the creative power of Jaleo HD to the most
powerful HD platform ever, the SGI Onyx 3000 series."
"With the introduction of the DMediaPro digital media products, SGI
reinforces its position as provider of the premier workstation and server
platforms for film and video post-production," said Donald McClure, president,
Mathematical Technologies Inc. (MTI). "MTI embraced SGI's introduction of
industry leading HD I/O products in 1999. We are excited now to make MTI
IntelliDeck software available on Silicon Graphics Octane2 workstations with
DMediaPro DM2 and on SGI 3000 family systems with DMediaPro DM3."
"The ability to deliver high-powered graphics on SGI Onyx 3000 series
systems with DMediaPro DM3 for both vi[z]rt's traditional broadcast and more
technically challenging multipipe display projects is something that we have
been really looking forward to," said Greg Petroff, vice president of
marketing, vi[z]rt. "We're showing HD on the SGI Onyx 3000 series at NAB, and
we see being able to address broadcast graphics in the HD marketplace as
critical. vi[z]rt software on the SGI Onyx 3000 series with DM3 will optimize
the creation and delivery of real-time digital content for virtual set and
broadcast graphics applications. The fact that SGI is bringing to the
marketplace the next-generation SGI NUMA video architecture with its HD GVO
graphics engines and DMediaPro DM3 is important to us. It reflects our desire
to give our customers the best hardware choices possible."
"Kaydara is very pleased that FiLMBOX is among the first software
applications available on the new SGI Onyx 3000 series with DMediaPro3 DM3
capabilities," said Michel Besner, president of Kaydara. "DMediaPro
DM3-enhanced film mastering, uncompressed HD/SD multistream compositing
capabilities, real-time on-air graphics and high-quality colorspace conversion
will greatly benefit FiLMBOX artists in the television broadcast, 3D
 animation, production, and post-production environments."

     The DMediaPro DM3 Technology Advantage
DMediaPro DM3 on SGI 3000 family systems provides real-time HD and SD
video I/O. Two independent input and two independent output channels can be
combined into a dual-link signal for video plus alpha.

SGI 3000 family with DMediaPro DM3 supports:
-- All major HD and SD video formats including 1080p, 1080PsF, 1080i and
        720p
