NEW YORK, Aug. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Shannon Medical Center has made tremendous strides in reaching new patient satisfaction goals set forth by its leadership team after partnering with leading healthcare technology company, CipherHealth.
At the heart of patient satisfaction there is a process called rounding, whereby nurses monitor vital signs, address concerns, and document progress, among other key benchmarks of care. To address patient satisfaction goals, Shannon Medical Center looked to upgrade their rounding process through the implementation of a new digital rounding tool called Orchid.
Initially introduced to Shannon through a free trial awarded to the center at the American Organization of Nursing Executives (AONE) conference, Shannon found that digital rounding with Orchid had a substantial and measureable impact on patient satisfaction. As a result, Shannon decided to move forward at the conclusion of the trial period to fully deploy Orchid within the hospital.
According to Becky Fuentes, RN, MSN, Shannon Associate Chief Nursing Officer, "Our team set comprehensive goals around our rounding process, which included having each patient rounded on at least once during his or her stay. We strive to ensure patient concerns are swiftly addressed, while collecting valuable data to improve our overall patient experience, and Orchid enabled us to meet these goals with tremendous ease. We are excited to see what we can accomplish with this tool moving forward."
The Orchid Difference
Traditionally, nurses have used pen and paper for patient rounds, however: this method has been found to cause miscommunication, misplaced information, and a general lack of care coordination. Orchid optimizes the traditional rounding process by providing a digital tool to standardize the questions asked during rounds, aggregate the information collected, and send alerts to appropriate departments for swift issue resolution.
"Orchid was designed to fit into the existing patient-care workflow, without creating additional work for already busy nurses," said Meril Pothen, Account Strategist for CipherHealth. "By adding greater efficiency and organization to the rounding process, Shannon is giving its nurses the opportunity to focus on doing what they truly care about- providing the highest quality of care to patients."
In order to profoundly impact the patient experience through rounding, Shannon wanted to ensure issues are identified and resolved in real-time. Orchid's alerting capabilities fulfill this goal by removing the burden of nurses having to track down staff members to resolve issues. As soon as a concern is identified, Orchid sends a notification to the appropriate department. For example, if a patient has a complaint about a light bulb in their room going out, a nurse could use Orchid to automatically alert the Environmental Services department, outlining exactly where the issue is occurring and how it can be resolved. Features like these improve the level of coordination among various hospital departments and ensure patients' needs are addressed in a timely manner.
"Rounding has been a critical priority, but Orchid has streamlined the process and helped department directors work collaboratively as a team to further meet the patients' needs," said Bobby Bluford, BSN, RN, Director of Med/Surg at Shannon Medical Center.
The implementation of Orchid is yet another important step in Shannon Medical Center's ongoing effort to deliver the highest quality care to patients. This commitment is further reflected in the facility's DAISY Award, a hospital-wide initiative to recognize nurses who provide exceptional care. Shannon understands that optimal care is not achieved solely through innovative solutions, but also requires satisfied, empowered staff on the front lines.
