Sipex Captures Coveted EDN "Innovation of the Year" Award with SP508 Multi-protocol Serial Transceiver IC

Apr 13, 2001, 01:00 ET from Sipex Corporation

    BILLERICA, Mass., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Sipex Corporation's
(Nasdaq: SIPX), newest proprietary single chip, multi-protocol serial
transceiver, the SP508, has won EDN Magazine's prestigious and highly coveted
"Innovation of the Year" Award in the Analog IC and Discrete Semiconductor
product category for the year 2000. The award was presented to Sipex at EDN
Magazine's annual "Innovation of the Year" Awards ceremony held Monday night
 in San Francisco CA.
The SP508, selected by the readership of EDN in online balloting, is a
rugged, 5V only, 40Mbps, 8-channel multi-protocol serial transceiver IC with
programmable DTE/DCE and on-chip termination resistors. It is the key
component that enables the fastest, smallest, and most cost-effective
communication port solutions currently available for wide area network (WAN)
equipment such as routers, switches, hubs and access devices. The SP508
supports the 8 most popular industry standard serial protocols, any of which
can be configured on-the-fly using an industry standard 3 bit word. To
accommodate the V.11 and V.35 protocols, switchable, on chip termination
resistors have been included. The IC also features a loopback mode that
 facilitates network diagnostic testing.
From the newest server platforms designed by Fortune 50 companies to MUXs
and routers developed both domestically and abroad, the SP508 has already
achieved over $4M dollars of design ins since its introduction, late last
Fall. "The SP508 is an excellent example of Sipex's ability to understand our
customer's needs and develop an innovative and enabling solution," offered
David Lee, Director of Interface Product Management. "and we have carried our
customer technical support one step further by obtaining the European
Telecommunications Standards' NET1/2 and TBR1/2 certification for the SP508.
This represents an important time and resource savings for our customers when
they undergo their certification process, a requirement for all equipment
intended for connection to a public telecommunications network."

     About Sipex:
Sipex Corporation designs, manufactures and markets value-added, high-
performance, analog integrated circuits using standard mixed-signal and
dielectrically isolated BiCMOS wafer process technologies.
The company markets over 750 products in three core product areas:
interface, power management, and analog displays. The interface product group
contains proprietary dual and multi-protocol transceivers, along with standard
RS-232, RS-485 and high speed, differential transceivers. The power management
product group includes low drop out linear regulators, DC to DC switching
regulators, PWM controllers, charge pumps, and microprocessor supervisors. The
analog display product group consists primarily of electroluminescent display
drivers for backlighting small- to medium-sized LCD displays.
