 Stockholders will be held at the Royal York Hotel, located at 100 Front Street
 West, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5J 1E3 on Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at 2:00
 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time. The record date for determination of stockholders
 entitled to vote at the meeting was March 26, 2001.
     SMTC also reported that today it filed its Form 10-K for the fiscal year
 ended December 31, 2000 with the Securities and Exchange Commission, and has
 also begun the distribution process of its annual report to stockholders.
