MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 23 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ --
SGI's (NYSE: SGI) long-time customer, Sony Pictures Imageworks, has made a
significant purchase of 100 Silicon Graphics(R) Octane2(TM) visual
workstations for continuing production on the Warner Bros.' feature film
Harry Potter and the Scorcer's Stone and Columbia Pictures' Spider-Man and
Stuart Little II. Sony Pictures Imageworks is providing these workstations to
its content creation team, which has recently grown to more than 400 members.
They will use the powerful, IRIX(R) OS-based Silicon Graphics Octane2
workstations with SGI(TM) VPro(TM) graphics for 3D modeling, 3D texture
painting, color, lighting, compositing and digital effects on the three films
currently in production and on many future projects.
The 100 Silicon Graphics Octane2 workstations will be used for the most
graphics-intensive applications and include the VPro graphics V6, V8 and V12
configurations. Imageworks made the purchase to handle its increased workload
this season, which, in addition to the three films planned for late 2001 and
2002 release, also includes a number of scenes for Evolution and America's
Sweethearts, both due to be released this summer. One of the preeminent
digital character animation and visual effects companies in the world, and a
predominantly SGI system-based facility since its inception, Imageworks has
been nominated for Academy Awards(R) for visual effects on Starship Troopers,
Stuart Little, and Hollow Man -- all of which were created using SGI(TM)
 workstations and servers.
"We chose Octane2 for its overall performance and its high-end graphics
capabilities," said George Joblove, senior vice president, technology, Sony
Pictures Imageworks. "As we go from one production to the next, the level of
sophistication of the work and computational demands increase, and we need
high-performance systems both to do our work and to live up to our clients'
expectations. With the power of Octane2, our artists will be able to handle
more complex scenes, provide faster iterations and work more efficiently.
Octane2 allows artists to focus more on their work and less on the tool."
Joblove also pointed out that, "it will be extremely easy to integrate
Octane2 into our facility, since most of our workstations are from SGI. And
all of our machines are networked together using a number of SGI Origin 200
servers, which is our dominant compute server architecture -- it's a fairly
 straightforward deployment."
"We are excited that Sony Pictures Imageworks has selected Octane2 as its
production platform to create the effects wizardry of its much-anticipated
films," said Greg Estes, vice president and general manager,
Telecommunications and Media, SGI. "This year's Academy Award nomination of
Sony Pictures Imageworks for Hollow Man is a significant confirmation that SGI
is producing and delivering the industry's most advanced visual workstations
that our customers demand to create groundbreaking visual effects."
Imageworks is currently working on the Columbia Pictures' releases
Spider-Man, directed by Sam Raimi with John Dykstra as senior visual effects
supervisor and Karen Goulekas as visual effects supervisor, and Stuart Little
II, the sequel to the hit film, with Jerome Chen supervising visual effects,
due to be released in 2002. Imageworks is also working on the effects for
Warner Bros.' Harry Potter, on which Rob Legato is visual effects supervisor,
which is scheduled for a November release. All these projects will be created
 using SGI workstations and servers.
