Southwest Gas Selects BancTec to Automate Its Remittance Processing Operation; Agreement Includes E-Series(TM) Transport, PayCourier(TM) Retail 2-Pass

Apr 02, 2001, 01:00 ET from BancTec, Inc.

ORLANDO, Fla., April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- BancTec, Inc. today announced that
Southwest Gas Corporation is upgrading the remittance processing equipment at
its corporate headquarters in Las Vegas, Nevada, with BancTec hardware and
software. The new system, which is scheduled to go into production this
month, allows Southwest Gas to switch from an operator-driven function to an
 automated solution.
Under the terms of the agreement, Southwest Gas will replace four BancTec
9400 workstations that were installed in the late 1980s with a single E-Series
transport operating at 800 documents per minute. BancTec's popular PayCourier
Retail 2-Pass remittance processing solution will run on top of the E-Series
platform, as well as two existing BancTec 9500 workstations used by the
 utility.
"The key to the Southwest Gas upgrade is our ability to respond to
customer inquiries quickly and reliably," said Roxann Hoffman, manager of
accounting for Southwest Gas. "BancTec has made our transition to a two-pass
solution very smooth and painless. And with its notable improvements in
exception item handling, PayCourier Retail 2-Pass ensures increased accuracy
and efficiency in our remittance operation."
Previously, Southwest Gas used a one-pass solution, which required
operators to manually key check amounts into the system. PayCourier Retail
2-Pass, on the other hand, is an image-based processing solution that uses
BancTec's ReadFIRST(TM) CAR/LAR check amount recognition system to
automatically compare courtesy and handwritten legal amounts for improved
 accuracy.
"PayCourier Retail was the logical choice for Southwest Gas," said Gordon
Frederick, BancTec's vice president of national sales, who indicated that
BancTec is delighted to extend its long-term relationship with the utility.
"The two-pass solution eliminates the need for operator intervention more than
70 percent of the time, thereby reducing labor and costs related to data entry
 and minimizing errors."
The agreement also includes BancTec's PayCourier Archive, which allows
Southwest Gas to manage, store and retrieve a variety of payment source data
types and images. PayCourier Archive ensures that customer problems and
exceptions are resolved quickly and efficiently.
BancTec is featuring PayCourier Retail 2-Pass at its booth (#320), here,
at the BAI Transaction Processing 2001 Conference.
