Spectra Science and Kleen-Tex Industries Establish Agreement for Spectra's LaserCode(TM) Technology in Mat Identification

Apr 30, 2001, 01:00 ET from Spectra Science Corporation

PROVIDENCE, R.I., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Spectra Science Corporation and
Kleen-Tex Industries, Inc. today announced that Spectra has granted Kleen-Tex
exclusive use of its proprietary LaserCode label technology for commercially
launderable mat and mop identification. The new labels, designed to withstand
challenging environments, will provide accurate identification of these
products throughout their life cycle, which includes repeated launderings.
LaserCode labels are a hybrid technology that leverages the signal-to-
noise advantages of light emission with the high code densities of bar coding.
Each label contains a series of lines that emit one of several wavelengths to
represent a unique number. Since the label emits wavelengths of light rather
than reflecting incoming light, as with barcodes, they are highly tolerant of
soiling and wash fading. "Kleen-Tex's reputation for product leadership in
the textile rental and commercial mat markets and their need for a ruggedized
label technology is a great example of the type of coding and tracking
solutions we can provide," states Dr. Nabil M. Lawandy, President and CEO of
 SSC.
"Spectra's LaserCode technology is an attractive solution that we can
economically provide to our customers for automatic identification and
tracking of their mats and other products in several stages of the rental
cycle. Spectra's labels are particularly useful for our graphic design mat
business where automated identification is becoming a critical requirement,"
said Ralph Howard, President, Kleen-Tex Industries, Inc.
Spectra Science Corporation, headquartered in Providence, RI is an optical
materials and systems company with a number of patented platform technologies.
The company has developed new and unique product solutions for the coding,
authentication, marking, tracking, and sensing markets. Spectra Science
manufactures and markets its products to industries that include brand
authentication, document and mail processing, drug discovery and textile
 services.
Kleen-Tex, headquartered in LaGrange, GA, is a worldwide manufacturer of
launderable mats, mops, and shop towels for the industrial laundry and
commercial markets. The company has manufacturing plants in the United
States, England, Austria, Poland, South Africa and Japan. Kleen-Tex is the
only US mat manufacturer with in-house rubber production capabilities. Having
introduced the first washable rubber-backed mat in January of 1970, the Kleen-
Tex product line now includes standard, all-rubber, specialty, and graphic
 matting.
