St. Jude Medical Announces Release of New Catheter System For the Diagnosis of Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation

Supreme Spiral SC(TM) Catheters and Fast-Cath Duo(TM) Guiding Introducers

Allow Simultaneous Mapping of Pulmonary Veins

Apr 30, 2001, 01:00 ET from St. Jude Medical, Inc.

    ST. PAUL, Minn., April 30 /PRNewswire/ --
St. Jude Medical Inc. (NYSE: STJ) today announced the release of new
electrophysiology catheters and guiding introducers that can assist clinicians
in the diagnosis of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF), a common heart
 arrhythmia.
     (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000101/JUDELOGO )
The new 4 Fr. (French) Supreme Spiral SC(TM) catheters are deployed into
the left atrium via specialized Fast-Cath Duo(TM) guiding introducers allowing
physicians to circumferentially map the ostia of the pulmonary veins. The
catheter's unique spiral-shaped curve tips can assist the physician in
identifying preferential entrance or exit points where atrial fibrillation
propagates into the left atrium. The new catheter system allows two catheters
to be deployed through a single transseptal puncture for the simultaneous
mapping of a set of pulmonary veins.
Atrial fibrillation represents an immense global health care and financial
challenge. AF is the most common significant cardiac arrhythmia, affecting
over 5 million people worldwide. It is a common risk factor for --and cause
of -- stroke. Annual medical expenditures exceed $7 billion in the U.S.
 alone.
Commenting on the release of the 4 Fr. Supreme Spiral SC(TM) catheters and
Fast-Cath Duo(TM) guiding introducers, David W. Adinolfi, President of the St.
Jude Medical Daig Division, said, "The Supreme Spiral SC catheters and
Fast-Cath Duo guiding introducers are important tools from St. Jude Medical
for the diagnosis of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. St. Jude Medical offers
the industry's broadest range of guiding introducer and catheter based
technology to diagnose PAF. The new 4 French Supreme Spiral SC catheters
represent a significant advance in mapping technology for PAF since two
catheters can be deployed into the left atrium for mapping through a single
transseptal puncture. Competitive mapping catheters usually require one
transseptal puncture for each catheter deployed. Our new system may have the
potential of reducing overall procedure times as well as complications that
 are associated with transseptal procedures."

St. Jude Medical, Inc. (http://www.sjm.com) is dedicated to the design,
manufacture and distribution of innovative medical devices of the highest
quality, offering physicians, patients and payers unmatched clinical
 performance and demonstrated economic value.
