HONOLULU, April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hawaii Department of Taxation has
announced the launch of its comprehensive online tax filing system at the
State of Hawaii's official website, www.eHawaiiGov.org. Hawaii businesses and
citizens will soon be able to use e-Filing to access the most commonly used
tax forms, file their state taxes, and make tax payments via the Internet.
The introduction of an online tax payment service is part of Governor
Benjamin Cayetano's initiative that State agencies offer timesaving electronic
services through eHawaiiGov, the State's Internet portal. The e-Filing system
was developed for the Department of Taxation by the Hawaii Information
Consortium, a subsidiary of eGovernment provider NIC (Nasdaq: EGOV) that
manages eHawaiiGov on behalf of the State of Hawaii.
With this new service, individual, sole proprietor, and business taxpayers
can now access the tax system through www.eHawaiiGov.org and file selected
income, withholding, and other tax returns online. Currently, there are
12 online forms available and throughout the next six months additional forms
will be introduced such as General Excise Tax and other tax filings. In
addition, any user can pay tax fees over the Internet with a valid checking or
savings account by using eHawaiiGov's secure payment system.
"Hawaii's user-friendly e-Filing tax payment system is designed to save
time for Hawaii citizens and businesses by meeting their unique needs," said
Marie Okumura, Director of the Hawaii Department of Taxation. "Our service is
available 24 hours a day and seven days a week, which means that busy
taxpayers can file their taxes when it's most convenient for them."
Currently, Individual and business taxpayers can file extensions,
estimated income tax forms, withholding period returns, one-time event
business license applications and other miscellaneous forms through Hawaii's
e-Filing system. Taxpayers who are unable to complete their State of Hawaii
individual or business income tax return by the April 20 deadline can also
file for an extension online and make a payment with the extension. The
online tax system is free to users whose returns do not require additional
payments, and an introductory $2.50 processing fee will be added for those who
pay their taxes over the Internet.
"E-Filing is yet another example of how eGovernment can benefit citizens
and businesses in Hawaii," said Aka DeMesa, General Manager of eHawaiiGov.
"With eHawaiiGov, filing a tax return is now as easy as checking your e-mail."
Hawaii's e-Filing system has developed with industry-leading security
technology. All personal information traveling between the taxpayer's browser
and the eHawaiiGov server is fully encrypted with SSL (Secured Sockets Layer).
In addition, taxpayer browsers are not allowed to store any confidential
information on their hard drives, which prevents unauthorized persons from
gaining access to a taxpayer's computer. The taxpayer's account information
is also not saved as part of the registration profile, and the user must
re-enter sensitive information each time a tax payment is made. The
Department of Taxation and eHawaiiGov have made it a priority to safeguard
taxpayer information so citizens and businesses will feel safe and secure as
 they file and pay electronically.
