Statement by Arthur Pober, Ed.D., President, Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), Regarding FTC Report on Marketing Violent Entertainment to Children

Apr 24, 2001, 01:00 ET from Entertainment Software Rating Board

NEW YORK, April 24 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- The following
is a statement by Arthur Pober, Ed.D., president of the Entertainment Software
 Rating Board (ESRB):

"The ESRB is pleased the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has acknowledged
the interactive software industry's strengthened efforts to market its
 products responsibly.
"We are proud to have developed what the FTC has described as a
'comprehensive self-regulatory system' and are committed to fully enforcing
compliance through our Advertising Review Council. We are especially
gratified that other industry segments have adopted our longstanding practice
of providing detailed content descriptors to complement summary ratings.
"The ESRB's primary mission is to ensure that parents and consumers have
the information they need to choose the right video and computer games for
their families. To achieve that goal, we have gone well beyond the
 recommendations provided by the FTC.
"For example, ESRB Interactive's (ESRBi) comprehensive program to protect
children's personal information on the Internet, ESRB Privacy Online, last
week became the first privacy seal provider to receive the FTC's strongest
endorsement as a 'safe harbor' under the Children's Online Privacy Protection
Act. And on Thursday, April 26, the ESRB will unveil a new public service
announcement featuring World Series MVP(R) Derek Jeter as part of our ongoing
"check the rating" public education campaign."

The Derek Jeter PSA will be unveiled Thursday at 10:00 a.m. EDT at Mickey
 Mantle's Restaurant, located at 42 Central Park South (between 5th & 6th
Avenues), New York. For more information about the event, or to receive a
copy of the PSA, please contact Siobhan McCready at 202-338-8700.
