STOPP: New Planned Parenthood Condoms Are Risky

Apr 25, 2001, 01:00 ET from STOPP International

WASHINGTON, April 25 /PRNewswire/ -- "When Gloria Feldt announced her
latest marketing scheme -- the Planned Parenthood Condom -- she claimed it was
a 'condom you can trust.' But this is far from the truth," said Ed Szymkowiak,
national director of STOPP International (an American Life League division).
"Objective and rigorous scientific studies have shown the high percentage of
failure of condoms especially when it comes to preventing HIV/AIDS," he said.
C.M. Roland, the editor of Rubber Chemistry and Technology, said, "the
AIDS virus is only 0.1 micron (4 millionths of an inch) in size. Since this is
a factor of 50 smaller than the voids inherent in rubber, the virus can
readily pass through the condom should it find a passage. A reluctance to
stake one's life on the ability of a condom to prevent HIV infection bespeaks
wisdom" (Washington Times, 4/22/92). Roland also noted that condoms have a 12
percent failure rate in preventing pregnancy.
"Not only is the use of condoms very risky, it is also immoral. Given the
life and death nature of using condoms, should we be trusting Planned
Parenthood's marketing propaganda or scientific fact?" asked Szymkowiak.

STOPP is a division of American Life League, the nation's largest pro-life
educational organization with more than 375,000 supporting families.
