Stratus Technologies Re-enters Telecom Market Following Two-Year Hiatus

Augments Legacy Products with New Fault-Tolerant Servers for Windows 2000

MAYNARD, Mass., April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Stratus Technologies
International, S.a r.l., and its wholly owned USA subsidiary Stratus
Technologies, maker of the world's most reliable server technology, announced
today an agreement with Lucent Technologies to remove certain contractual
restrictions limiting Stratus from competing in the telecommunications
industry. Further, a new sales unit dedicated to re-establishing Stratus
Technologies as a preferred platform supplier for mission-critical telecom
 applications is now in place.
Stratus systems are currently deployed by many telecommunications firms
throughout the world for operational support systems such as network
monitoring and billing data collection, enhanced services, and intelligent
network applications such as 800-number services.
Ascend Communications, Inc. acquired Stratus Computer, Inc. in 1998
expressly for its telecom technology. The enterprise computing business of
the former Stratus was taken private in a leveraged management buyout from
Ascend in February 1999. As a condition of this buyout Stratus agreed to not
sell into the telecom industry for a period of time.
As of February 28, 2001, the newly named Stratus Technologies became free
to sell and service the new Stratus(R) ftServer(TM) family of IA-32 fault
tolerant systems for Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 2000 in this market. Lucent,
which subsequently acquired Ascend, has also agreed to immediately lift
certain other restrictions that were scheduled to expire February 28, 2002.
Stratus may now directly sell its Continuum(TM) 600 and 1200 Series servers,
XA/R legacy systems, system upgrades for VOS and FTX-supported applications,
and service for these systems to telecommunications customers.

     Barrett Heads Telecom Sales
Michael J. Barrett has been promoted to Director, Telecom Business
Development and Sales for North America, according to Michael Thompson, senior
vice president, Worldwide Sales and Marketing of Stratus Technologies, Inc.
With Stratus since 1991, Barrett has advanced through sales, sales management,
and partner-relationship management positions at the company, serving most
recently as director, Strategic Alliances. In his new position, he is charged
with building a vertical sales unit and overseeing Stratus' rapid re-
introduction to its former customer base, as well as new-account penetration.
"Telecom service providers can once again come directly to the technology
source for the fault-tolerant systems they've come to trust for applications
that must not fail," said Thompson. "The reception we have received already
from many former accounts is very gratifying, and we're fully geared up to
fill orders. We believe that demand both for legacy systems and our low-cost,
industry-standard ftServers will be strong and sustainable."
