Suffering From Spring Fever? Creating Outdoor Living Spaces May Be Just The Cure

Apr 12, 2001, 01:00 ET from Durasol Awnings

ORANGE COUNTY, N.Y., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- What is spring fever?
According to Webster's New World(TM) Dictionary Third College Edition, spring
fever is "the laziness or restlessness that many people feel during the first
warm, sunny days of spring." Half, 49 percent, of Americans say they suffer
from spring fever, according to a recent survey sponsored by Durasol
 Awnings(R).
How do you cure spring fever? Go outside! Seventy percent of those who
suffer from spring fever say they plan outdoor activities to deal with their
affliction. Almost half, 42 percent, plan outside activities around the house
such as yard work, gardening, picnics and barbeques, while 16 percent will
engage in some type of outdoor recreational or athletic activity like
 baseball, roller blading or swimming.
"We have the perfect way to help beat spring fever," says Larry Bedosky,
marketing manager for Durasol Awnings(R), America's leading brand of custom-
made, professionally installed, retractable awnings. "Because so many people
are planning to spend time outdoors this spring, why not make the most of your
outdoor space with an awning? Awnings allow you to enjoy the outdoors while
providing protection from the sun and unpredictable weather."
Durasol offers a complete line of custom-made retractable and stationary
awnings for decks, patios, terraces, windows and doorways, which are installed
by a network of authorized dealers throughout the country. For the utmost in
comfort and convenience, Durasol offers motorized awnings. At the flip of a
switch, they can be adjusted to any desired position and stop automatically
when fully extended or retracted. Easy to install and maintain, awnings can
be mounted on almost any flat surface or under a soffit. Durasol Awnings are
available in more than 200 vibrant colors and patterns, with widths and
projections to suit virtually any need or lifestyle.
"Awnings offer much more coverage and convenience with fewer hassles than
patio umbrellas," says Bedosky. "They provide valuable touch-of-a-button
protection from light rain and harmful sun rays, which means you can enjoy
 more time outdoors."
When warm weather arrives, patios, decks and gardens truly become extra
living spaces. When asked how they planned to "celebrate" the arrival of
spring, 72 percent of American homeowners surveyed cited yard work as their
primary activity; 64 percent say they will start some type of home improvement
project; 57 percent say they will entertain outdoors by hosting a picnic or a
barbeque in celebration of spring and 55 percent will start an outdoor
exercise regimen. Fifty-two percent look forward to starting a garden, 49
percent will bring out their lawn furniture even before the flowers have
finished blooming and 36 percent plan to participate in some type of sporting
activity like baseball, softball or tennis.
Who is most likely to suffer from spring fever? Women between the ages of
25 and 54 living in a rural area of the Northeast or upper Midwest portions of
the country are most susceptible. Findings concluded that spring fever
impacts people differently. Gender, age and geography are all factors that
 need to be considered:

-- More than half, 55 percent, of women surveyed say they suffer from
spring fever, compared to 42 percent of men.
-- Close to two-out-of-three (57 percent) people between the ages of 25
and 54 have spring fever, compared to less than half (43 percent) of
those that are 18 to 24. People over the age of 55 suffer the least,
with only one-out-of-three (34 percent) feeling the effects.
-- Those in the Northeast and upper Midwest portions of the country have a
greater chance of suffering from spring fever (55 percent) compared to
those who reside in the Southern and Western most parts of the country
        (44 percent).
-- If you live outside of a major metropolitan area you are more likely to
feel the effects of spring fever (56 percent) compared to those who
live in a city (46 percent).
