    PALO ALTO, Calif., April 16 /PRNewswire/ --
Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW)is strengthening its commitment to the
Service Provider community by extending the SunTone(SM) Certification and
Branding Program and introducing new initiatives to help companies architect,
build, certify and go-to-market with Web-enabled services that meet high
 industry standards.
At the company's SunTone + iForce Service Provider Conference in
Santa Clara, Calif. tomorrow, Sun will show its rock-solid commitment to
quality of service and driving profitability to the Service Provider market
 with:

-- New SunTone Certification for Storage Services
     -- New SunTone Configurations
-- New SunTone Services for Service Providers
-- New go-to-market programs for companies with SunTone certified
        solutions

"Sun is investing significantly in the outsourced services model to boost
its success," said Tim Dwyer, vice president of sales development and
marketing for Sun's Network Service Provider Group. "We have expanded SunTone
certification and added new offerings to help Service Providers excel. New
services and configurations from Sun will help companies build to SunTone
standards, certify their solutions and then go-to-market with Sun's commitment
to drive business to Service Providers with certified solutions."
New SunTone Certification for Storage Services certifies a Storage Service
Provider's primary, secondary and back-up/recovery services. The first two
companies to achieve SunTone certification for storage services are Arsenal
Digital Solutions for its Managed Disk and Backup & Restore services and
 StorageNetworks for its DataPACS(SM), NetPACS(SM), BackPACS(SM), SafePACS(SM)
and STORmanage(SM) data storage management services.
Sun is also adding SunTone Configurations to the certification program.
These pre-integrated, modular building blocks for Service Provider services
have been designed, sized and tested to SunTone best practices. The first
SunTone Configuration integrates data availability software, database,
operating system and hardware from VERITAS, Oracle and Sun (VOS). Available
from Sun, the VOS configuration is designed to provide a reliable, integrated
e-business platform from a single source.
New SunTone Services for Service Providers will also help companies
assess, architect, build and manage to SunTone standards. Uniquely designed
to meet the needs of Service Providers, the company's flexible solutions
portfolio includes consulting, training and support programs from a staff of
 over 12,600 dedicated service experts.
The SunTone Certification and Branding Program is an integral part of
Sun's value proposition for Service Providers. SunTone certification enables
companies to take advantage of new comprehensive go-to-market initiatives
 including:

-- SunTone Service Provider global agreement framework enabling companies
to do business with Sun anywhere in the world for faster time to market
-- Innovative compensation models incenting iForce partners and Sun's
Service Provider and Enterprise sales forces to drive end-user customer
        demand
-- Maximum level of partner co-marketing funds
-- Dual-sourcing from both Sun and its channel partners for rapid delivery
        of Sun solutions
-- Maximum discounts on Sun products

SunTone certification is awarded in three areas: Service Provider
services, hosted applications and integrator services. More than
175 companies alone have applied for Certification for Integrator Services
which opened recently in October. The first SunTone Certified Integrator
Services include: Amdahl's Infracare Customized Client Services, Qwest's
Customer Support Services/Integration Services and XOR's Managed Service
 Offering.
Led by Sun, SunTone Certification is one of the industry's first
collaborative efforts to define and audit Service Provider infrastructure,
operational practices, hardware, applications and overall service delivery to
help ensure industry-leading levels for performance, security and
availability. The program, with its SunTone certified "seal of approval,"
gives customers of Web-enabled services a means for identifying suppliers that
 meet defined high standards.
Launched with collaboration from industry leaders in May, 1999, the
SunTone Certification and Branding program has rapidly gained strong support.
Today, more than 1,400 companies from around the world, including Argentina,
Canada, China, France, Germany, Ireland, United Kingdom and the United States
have joined the program to apply for certification. More than 90 solutions
have earned SunTone certification to date.
