Survey Says: Telecom Professionals Looking for Stability, Not Stock Options

Initial TelecomCareers.Net JobSeeker Survey Finds Telecom Workers Still

Entertaining Start-Up Opportunities, But Eyeing Salary, Stability and

Long-Term Training

Apr 11, 2001, 01:00 ET from TelecomCareers.Net

NEW ORLEANS, April 11 /PRNewswire/ -- After a quarter of layoffs and other
indicators of uncertainty, telecom professionals are putting stock in long-
term stability and solid salaries, and not in last-year's much-ballyhooed
options. While 86 percent of the 2,100 professionals polled in
TelecomCareers.Net's first JobSeeker Survey would still consider joining a
start-up company, about 70 percent polled most value stability and a higher
salary in their next job. Only three percent ranked stock options as the
 biggest lure.
More than 70 percent considered ongoing training and educational
opportunities very important -- signaling that most telecom professionals are
job hunting today with long-term goals in mind.
"While a large majority of telecom workers still aren't afraid to join a
start-up, they are now very concerned with the 'big-picture' issues that
typically surface in executive-level interviews," said Quinn Jones, president
of TelecomCareers.Net. "Telecom job seekers will be much more selective in
the interview process and are looking to the Internet for more career
information and opportunities, instead of simply relying on personal networks
as they may have done in the past."
Other findings from the TelecomCareers.Net JobSeeker Survey include:
-- 56 percent of telecom professionals use the Internet as their primary
         source of job leads
-- Only 55 percent feel secure in their current job
-- 47 percent are considering looking for a new job outside of
         telecommunications
