SWIFT Standardizes on Datakey's PKI Smart Card Technology for Its SWIFTAlliance WebStation

Datakey Smart Cards Enable Secure and Trusted Online Environment for Financial

Communications Over SWIFTNet

Apr 17, 2001, 01:00 ET from Datakey, Inc.

MINNEAPOLIS, April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Datakey Inc. (Nasdaq: DKEY)
( http://www.datakey.com ) today announced that SWIFT, a leader in secure
global financial messaging, has selected Datakey's PKI smart card technology
to bundle with its SWIFTAlliance WebStation product.
SWIFT delivers secure messaging services to over 7,000 financial
organizations in 192 countries. The SWIFTAlliance WebStation is SWIFT's
strategic interface platform targeted at supporting communications over
SWIFTNet -- the organization's new private IP infrastructure that enables
interactive messaging, interactive file transfer and information browsing in a
 fully managed and secure environment.
Datakey smart cards, card readers and interface software were selected as
important components of the SWIFTAlliance WebStation because they provide the
most powerful cryptographic and portable security for digital credentials used
to authenticate and verify the identities of financial institutions and
 customers communicating over SWIFTNet.
"Financial institutions are deploying the SWIFTAlliance WebStation because
it provides convenient and secure access to our new IP-based SWIFTNet
messaging and transaction system," said Dusan Pobuda, Senior Product Manager
for security at SWIFT. "Datakey smart card technology brings a high level of
trust, convenience and security, which is essential to our customers and
underlines our commitment to the strongest security on SWIFTNet. With FIPS
140-1 private key protection and seamless interoperability with the SWIFTNet
PKI solution, Datakey smart cards were a natural fit with our SWIFTAlliance
 WebStation product."

Secure messaging and transaction services for global financial
 institutions
At financial institutions, the SWIFTAlliance WebStation is installed on an
operator's desktop PC. The WebStation provides access to services available
through SWIFTNet InterAct, FileAct and Browse. Typically, anywhere from one
to several dozen operators at a financial institution are equipped with the
SWIFTAlliance WebStation and smart card technology. Operators using SWIFTNet
services for secure messaging and non-repudiable transactions use a Datakey
smart card to log in to the SWIFTAlliance WebStation and to access authorized
services on SWIFTNet. Typical security features provided with SWIFTNet
include digitally signing or encrypting communications between two financial
institutions and authorizing access to closed user groups on the SWIFT
 network.

Customers are benefiting from the SWIFTAlliance WebStation for several
 reasons:
-- Low total cost of ownership -- SWIFTAlliance WebStation is designed to
make use of Internet technologies and open standards, simplifying
        deployment time and cost.
-- Ease-of-use -- The navigation and administration features are easy to
use. Datakey smart cards provide enhanced private key protection and
user convenience by removing SWIFT PKI credentials from vulnerable
workstations and generating/using them on a portable cryptographic
        smart card.
-- Single-window access to multiple services -- SWIFTAlliance WebStation
provides users with a single window to access multiple services
        available through SWIFTNet.
-- Rapid implementation of new services -- SWIFTAlliance WebStation
enables rapid implementation of new services by providing a secure,
ready-to-use end-user platform to service providers.

"Through our partnership with SWIFT, Datakey is continuing to execute on
its strategy of delivering the most advanced cryptographic smart card
solutions to the financial services market," said Colleen Kulhanek, vice
president of corporate marketing, Datakey. "Given SWIFT's leadership position
in global financial markets, the selection of Datakey smart cards for the
SWIFTAlliance WebStation is a strong indicator of the solid reputation we've
earned for delivering the most robust, secure and interoperable smart card
 technology for critical e-business transactions."
