Technology Seminar On VSB Transmission System Coming Soon to A Media Market Near You

    LAS VEGAS, April 25 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- With the
 FCC-mandated deadline to begin commercial digital television (DTV)
 broadcasting now barely 12 months away, Zenith Electronics Corporation has
 launched a series of intensive one-day seminars to familiarize broadcasters
 with the ATSC DTV standard's VSB transmission system.

     Following a successful session last month at WETA in Arlington, Va.,
 Zenith has scheduled the next seminars for May 22 in Milwaukee and June 18 in
 Los Angeles, with additional venues to be announced.  These seminars, led by
 Zenith Staff Consulting Engineer Gary Sgrignoli, are aimed at broadcasters,
 broadcast consultants, equipment manufacturers, cable operators and others
 interested in gaining a better understanding of the digital VSB (vestigial
 sideband) transmission standard and its performance attributes.  An integrated
 demonstration of current commercial and consumer transmission equipment is
 included.
     The day-long seminars open with a brief demonstration of digital
 high-definition television (HDTV), followed by presentations covering such
 topics as NTSC and DTV history, data communication and modulation theory, ATSC
 system overview, ATSC VSB tutorial, and VSB lab test plan, methodology and
 test results.  Other subjects include VSB transmission measurements, ATSC and
 FCC compliance; FCC channel allocation factors; ATSC cable carriage
 methodology; VSB field test plan, methodology and test results; and DTV
 receiver improvements.
     A VSB hardware demonstration will include basic lab test methodology and
 results; transmission site compliance measurements (ATSC and FCC); field test
 site methodology and results; and DTV receiver improvements.  A tutorial
 manual, featuring in-depth seminar notes and reference material, will be
 provided to each attendee in Milwaukee.
