Teddy Gleason Scholarship Winners Selected for 2009; Eight Students Will Receive $48,000 in Educational Grants

NEW YORK, June 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO and New York Shipping Association, Inc. today announced the eight winners of the 2009 Teddy Gleason Scholarships. The two trustees of the Scholarship Program, ILA Executive Vice President, Harold Daggett and NYSA President Frank McDonough, introduced the students at a luncheon on June 23, 2009 at Fraunces Tavern in Lower Manhattan.

All eight students are dependents of ILA members working for NYSA member companies in the Greater Metropolitan area. The NYSA-ILA Scholarship Fund, named in honor of the late ILA president Teddy Gleason, is open to dependents of active and retired ILA members in the Port of New York and New Jersey. This is the twenty-ninth annual scholarship program. Students will receive an annual grant of $6,000 per year for each one of four years in college.

The 2009 Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners are as follows:

Anthony J. Chin: Son of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Chin of Iselin, New Jersey. Mr. Chin is a member of ILA Local 1804-1 working at Ports America, Inc. Anthony plans to attend The College of New Jersey in Ewing, New Jersey.

John W. Costello, III: Son of Mr. & Mrs. John W. Costello, Jr. of Hillsdale, New Jersey. Mr. Costello is a member of ILA Local 1 working at Maher Terminals, Inc. John plans to attend Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in Piscataway, New Jersey.

Roman Dubchak: Son of Mr. and Mrs. Igor Dubchak of Bayonne, New Jersey, Mr. Dubchak is a member of ILA Local 1588 working at Global Terminal and Container Services. Roman plans to attend Steven's Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Kimberly A. Garrison: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Steven Garrison of Marlboro, New Jersey. Mr. Garrison is a member of ILA Local 1804-1 working at APM Terminals, Inc. Kimberly plans to attend Penn State University in University Park, Pennsylvania.

Melanie P. Pereira: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joao Pereira of Newark, New Jersey. Mr. Pereira is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at APM Terminals, Inc. Melanie plans to attend Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey.

Mona L. Safar: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Safar S. Safar of Hillside, New Jersey. Mr. Safar is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at APM Terminals. Mona plans to attend Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey.

Alaysha A. Suggs: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Robin Suggs of Easton, Pennsylvania. Mr. Suggs is a member of ILA Local 1233 working at Maher Terminals, Inc. Alaysha plans to attend Howard University in Washington, DC.

Eleonora Tavella: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Antonio Tavella of Colonia, New Jersey. Mr. Tavella is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at Ports America, Inc. Eleonora plans to attend Pace University in Pleasantville, New York.

The Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of academic performance and aptitude testing among other determinations. The scholarships are available to qualified applicants who wish to continue education at undergraduate, apprentice or training programs at any accredited colleges, universities and other institutions of higher learning. An independent agency - the College Scholarship Service based in Princeton, New Jersey - makes the selection of the scholarship winners.

The eight Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners join 32 other students currently enrolled in colleges and universities who were previously awarded these generous grants. The scholarship program was introduced in 1981 following collective bargaining between the ILA and employers represented by NYSA and it provides $192,000 in yearly assistance for 32 students.
