Temple University Health System Selects Allscripts

Patient Safety and Cost Reduction on Wireless Handhelds

Apr 12, 2001, 01:00 ET from Allscripts Healthcare Solutions

CHICAGO and PHILADELPHIA, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Allscripts Healthcare
Solutions (Nasdaq: MDRX), the leading provider of point-of-care decision
support tools for physicians, today announced an agreement to provide Temple
University Health System with the TouchWorks(TM) e-prescribing application,
the Pocket Library electronic reference guide, and Allscripts FirstFill(TM)
solution. The FirstFill program enables physicians to offer their patients
the choice of receiving the first dose of their prescription, for the most
commonly prescribed medications, directly at the point-of-care.
"At Temple, because we have a significant managed care population, we are
continually challenged to balance the shrinking healthcare dollar with our
commitment to providing the highest quality of care," said Dr. Howard Grant,
Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Temple University Health
System. "We are currently at risk for pharmacy costs for more than 58,000
 health plan members.
"We are equipping our physicians with the latest technology to improve
both the quality of information they receive and the quality of care they
provide. The Allscripts program will allow us to make the entire pharmacy
process friendlier for our patients and more efficient for our physicians. We
believe we can increase formulary compliance and reduce costs by providing
real-time information at the time the prescription is being written. We also
see tremendous value in the Allscripts technology that is delivered with
built-in integration to our IDX system. The integration and the value
proposition in FirstFill make Allscripts an ideal choice for our delivery
 network," said Dr. Grant.
The TouchWorks solutions will be used in selected Temple University
Medical Practice academic specialty practices and by physicians in the Temple
Physicians, Inc. primary care network. The deployment of the TouchWorks
solution, which is occurring over three phases, will be completed by year-end.
Phase one is scheduled to go live April 16th with more than 90 physicians
using the TouchWorks Prescribe module on the iPaq Pocket PC device from
 Compaq.
"Our solutions offer physicians and their practices a better workflow
process, which reduces pharmacy callbacks, provides better information, and
helps manage pharmaceutical costs," commented Glen Tullman, Allscripts Chief
Executive Officer. "There are many tangible benefits associated with the
TouchWorks solutions-patient safety, compliance, and convenience are
increased, as physicians are able to check for potential drug interactions,
prior adverse reactions and allergies, and inappropriate dosing levels during
the care process. Temple is leading the way in addressing the medication error
problem recently highlighted by the Institute of Medicine report. It all adds
up to better patient-focused healthcare, delivered more cost-effectively."
