The 5th Annual Webby Awards(R) Reveal Nominees for Best Sites of the Year

'Oscars of the Internet' to be Webcast live from San Francisco July 18th

    SAN FRANCISCO, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Capping a remarkable year that saw
 the Internet experience dramatic highs and lows, The International Academy of
 Digital Arts & Sciences(R) today unveiled the nominees for the 5th Annual
 Webby Awards.
     Shining a spotlight on the best in technology and creativity on the
 Internet, the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences announced five
 nominees in 27 categories, ranging from Politics and Film to Activism and
 Weird. A complete list of nominees follows this announcement.
     Widely hailed as the "Oscars of the Internet," The Webby Awards is the
 leading international honor for Web sites and individual achievement in
 technology and creativity. The awards are presented by the Academy, a
 350-member organization dedicated to the creative, professional, and technical
 advancement of new media.
     More than 3,000 technology luminaries and leaders in an array of
 traditional fields will attend the awards show, which has quickly become the
 Internet's biggest night of the year thanks to its critically acclaimed
 production, outrageous fashions, five-words-or-less speech limit, and
 celebrity judges. Past judges have included David Bowie, Tina Brown, Matt
 Groening, and Larry Ellison.
     "With the Internet undergoing major change, The Webby Awards are needed
 now more than ever to help people both avoid the hype and to enjoy the Web
 sites that are the most outstanding, entertaining, and useful," said Maya
 Draisin, the director of The International Academy of Digital Arts and
 Sciences. "The challenges facing the industry have also spurred this year's
 nominees to really push the limits of the medium and create truly exciting and
 inspiring online experiences."
     For the first time, the Academy will also present a new award that will
 recognize a single Web site that serves as a model of excellence in each of
 the judging criteria: content, structure and navigation, visual design,
 functionality, interactivity, and overall experience. This year the Academy
 will also institute a series of awards recognizing individual achievement in
 several categories.
     The Webby Awards voting process is audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
     Winners will be announced at The 2001 Webby Awards 2000 on July 18, 2001
