Apr 23, 2001, 01:00 ET from The American Stock Exchange

NEW YORK, April 23 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- The American
Stock Exchange(R) (Amex(R)) set a new daily record on Friday, April 20 for the
total number of options contracts traded in a single day -- 1,895,560. The
 previous record -- 1,868,401 contracts -- was set on April 18, 2001.
The Amex set an additional record when the total number of options
contracts traded for the week of April 16 through April 20 reached 7.1 million
contracts. The previous record was 5.6 million contracts, set the week of
 January 16 through January 19, 2001.
Michael T. Bickford, senior vice president for options at the Amex, said
Friday's record was set, in part, due to the strong rally in the equity market
when the Federal Reserve unexpectedly cut interest rates by one-half
 percentage point.
Option volume on the Amex has more than doubled in the past two years and
was up 60 percent in 2000.

The American Stock Exchange(R), a subsidiary of the National Association
of Securities Dealers, Inc. NASD(R)), is the only primary exchange that offers
trading across a full range of equities, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs),
including structured products and HOLDRS(SM), and options. In addition to its
role as a national equities market, the Amex is the leader in ETF listings,
listing 97 ETFs to date, and is the second-largest options exchange in the
U.S., trading options on broad-based and sector indexes as well as domestic
and foreign stocks. For more information, visit http://www.amex.com.
