ROCKVILLE, Md., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- From Picasso to Monet, pre-schoolers at The Goddard School at King Farm ( are learning about the world of fine art without ever leaving the classroom.

The school, which provides high quality educational programs to children ages six months to six years, has added a fine arts enrichment program to its pre-kindergarten curriculum. Introduced in October, the program uses age-appropriate materials and exercises to help students develop an appreciation of art.

Each week, four and five-year-olds study the works of a different artist and then demonstrate the techniques used in the art to create their own masterpieces. Recent projects include using shoeboxes to make a guitar – a project inspired by Picasso. According to owner Ross Flax, the program helps students develop creativity while teaching basic art techniques.

"This process is a great way to help students see that art is about more than just paint on paper," said Flax. "In addition to learning artistic techniques they can apply to their own original art, the children begin to develop an awareness of – and an appreciation for – different styles of art."

The Goddard School added the program to its curriculum with the help of Maria Garnica, who brings an extensive background in art education to her role as the program's teacher. Garnica earned a degree in fine arts from Los Andes University in Bogota, Columbia, and has taught art, as well as art history, to students of nearly every age.

"Maria helps our students learn to see the world differently and develop a strong appreciation for art," said Linda Wu, academic director for The Goddard School. "She is teaching them to express themselves through art and helping them see that they can learn about others through artistic expression as well."

The new fine arts program is available at no additional charge to all pre-kindergarten students enrolled in The Goddard School at King Farm. Nearly 70 students have participated in the program thus far.

Located at 900 Gaither Road in Rockville, The Goddard School provides high quality educational programs designed to meet the social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs of children ages six months to six years. In addition to the strong emphasis on foreign language and cultures, the school's play-based curriculum provides children with access to a wide range of extra-curricular activities such as sign language, art history, music appreciation and manners.
