The U.S. Army to Deploy Military Tracking Operations Portal Using Viador(TM)

The Viador E-Portal(TM) Will Be Direct Interface Between Military Personnel

And Military Operations Data, Tracking Movement of Materials, Troops

And Resources

Apr 16, 2001, 01:00 ET from Viador Inc.

    MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 16 /PRNewswire/ --
Viador Inc.(TM) (Nasdaq: VIAD), the leading self-service enterprise portal
provider, today announced the U.S. military will use the Viador E-Portal to
provide Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine officers with real-time access to all
soldier deployment and equipment movement activity reports, fostering direct,
instantaneous communication among the military branches.
Engineers at the U.S. Army's Software Engineering Center at Fort Belvoir,
Virginia are in the final stages of developing and testing the portal as part
of the TCAIMS II (Transportation Coordinator's Automated Information for
Movement System) project. The resulting "third-generation heavy lifting"
enterprise portal combines XML capabilities, a search engine, business
intelligence and knowledge management functions that optimize existing legacy
system information and allow soldiers and sailors to log on, punch in a
password and access needed reports. The Viador E-Portal acts as the user
interface, which analyzes a portal user's initial input,
Autonomy (Nasdaq: AUTN) provides the search engine and Sybase (Nasdaq: SYBS)
acts as the "back end hub," which aggregates internal business content and
delivers data and information to portal users.
"We were looking for a portal that leverages our existing legacy system
databases, allows for XML transmission of data and also web-enables other
existing information, so that soldiers can access reports 24/7," said
George Raymond, director of strategic business operations at the U.S. Army's
Software Engineering Center in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. "While we considered
knowledge management portals and business intelligence portals, only the
Viador-Sybase portal combination allows us to achieve our primary goal of
web-enabling our extensive legacy systems without creating new databases from
 the ground up."
The Viador E-Portal directly complements Sybase's Enterprise Portal (EP)
2.0 product and, in fact, Viador E-Portal Express(TM) has received
compatibility validation from the Sybase Portal Certification Team.
"Viador's multi-layered E-Portal technology is specifically designed to
work with complex, government databases and legacy systems. We are committed
to working with government agencies, including the IRS and the Department of
Education," said Steve Dille, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales and
Marketing, Viador Inc. "The Viador E-Portal makes the Army's new portal a
highly cost-effective and time-sensitive solution for bringing military data
onto the screens of soldiers and military officers -- anytime, anywhere."
George Raymond of the U.S. Army's Communications-Electronics Command
(CECOM) Software Engineering Center, stated that the new portal's importance
is highlighted by a complex military action like Operation Desert Storm, a
multi-force, multi-service operation in which each military agency needed to
be "linked in" to other agencies' activities -- in real-time. The new Army
portal allows "a marine using a wireless device to interchange data within a
transportation/coordination environment," said Raymond, who calls Viador's
front-end portion of the portal "intuitive" and "as easy as using a
garden-variety web browser." The Army portal will undergo extensive software
quality testing during the next year across the globe.
