"After looking at all of the major vendors in this space, we felt that
Pinnacle Systems' end-to-end server and news editing solution offered the best
platform on which to base our 24-hour local television news channels," said
Kirk Varner, Vice President of news services, Time Warner Cable. "Of
particular importance to us was finding a solution that wouldn't be obsolete
in a short period of time. We think Pinnacle's products give us a solid
 foundation for the future."
"In 24-hour news production, what kills you is repetition," said
Harlan Neugeboren, Senior Director Technology at Time Warner Cable. "We're
able to take a 'video jukebox' approach to producing the news in segments and
the broadcast looks live, even when it's not. Pinnacle Systems has a good
vision of the future and understands where news is going."
"We are thrilled to be part of Time Warner Cable's new state of the art
news project," said Bob Wilson, President of Pinnacle Systems' Broadcast
Solutions Division. "They are putting together a cost effective solution that
can be emulated by other broadcasters that is faster and more flexible than
conventional news systems without sacrificing quality of content and that has
 a major market on-air look."
Using the latest technology, each of Time Warner Cable's news
organizations delivers breaking news, local stories, weather, sports and
financial news. Central to the design of the newest facilities is the news
automation system. Pinnacle's VorteXNews will be integrated with OmniBus
Systems Automation Desktop Control. Editorial and production personnel can
edit news packages that combine stored clips with added text from a
workstation. In addition, the journalists can view and perform cuts-only
editing via Pinnacle Systems' Media Archive Retrieval System (MARS) proxy
system. Tight integration with the Omnibus system keeps the overall newsroom
running smoothly, allowing Time Warner Cable to compete in its market with
fewer personnel that many other news organizations. Moving files and
generating segments is quick, as VorteXNews works over standard Ethernet
connections, alleviating the need for fiber in the newsroom.
Time Warner Cable also plans to integrate the Vertigo Multimedia Producer
suite of tools and Pinnacle Systems' Deko 2200 and Dekocast at its news
facilities. The Vertigo Graphics Builder Active X and the Deko 2200 will
allow journalists to build WYSIWYG Graphics at their desktops. Also, the
Vertigo will be linked with Omnibus and the Pinnacle DEKOcast to provide
graphics layering capabilities including video pushbacks and live data crawls
in Master Control. "We are still working on the interface between Dekocast,
Vertigo and Omnibus but we are planning to take advantage of the logo
insertion, character generation, audio mixing, data, digital video effects
creation and display capabilities of DEKOcast," adds Harlan Neugeboren.
DEKOcast offers full master control suite functionality, allowing each
highly-automated news station to cost-effectively manage. With a single,
consolidated system, Time Warner Cable uses DEKOcast to its maximum advantage
in getting its "live" look on the air.
Time Warner Cable was looking for a standards-based solution that can grow
its needs evolve. VorteXNews scales easily and can be expanded using off the
shelf CPUs, drive arrays, networking technologies and other components.
"Vortex Newtwork News allows us to implement our vision of what a server and
editing system should be for our newsrooms by seamlessly integrating tools for
capturing, editing, browsing, playing to air and archiving," adds Neugeboren
