TNMP Customers May Now Choose Wind Energy Option

Apr 03, 2001, 01:00 ET from Texas-New Mexico Power Company

FORT WORTH, Texas, April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Customers of Texas-New Mexico
Power Company now have the option of a renewable electricity product: Energy
Ranch wind power. The environmentally friendly electricity generated by the
wind on the plains and mesas of West Texas will be available to TNMP customers
and to the customers of its retail affiliate, First Choice Power, in
 July 2001.
Wind turbines with new technology on King Mountain will generate the power
for Energy Ranch. Wind energy is among the most efficient renewable energy
resources available. Using wind power instead of coal, oil or gas energy
offsets the use of millions of gallons of water and tons of toxic emissions of
sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon dioxide.
"By choosing Energy Ranch wind power, TNMP customers will help save more
than 4 million gallons of water a year," said Larry Dillon, TNMP vice
president of Power Resources. "That's the amount of water used to generate a
like amount of electricity from oil or gas. In Texas, we all know the
importance of water conservation, especially given last year's drought
 conditions."
Customer usage can vary significantly depending on the weather, with most
consumers in Texas using more electricity in the summer than in the winter.
The average residential customer in Texas uses about 1,100 kilowatt-hours of
power per month. Investing in Energy Ranch wind power electricity will amount
to 1 cent more per kilowatt-hour for TNMP customers. The wind power will be
sold in blocks of 100 kilowatt-hours.
Dillon said TNMP customers can have a direct, positive impact on the Texas
environment for as little as $1 more per month. "Green power is an option
many of our customers have requested," he said. "Energy Ranch now presents an
easy solution to add as much or as little renewable energy as a customer
 wants."
Enrollment for Energy Ranch wind power is limited. Through a joint
marketing agreement with Cielo Power Market, customers will be eligible on a
first-come, first-served basis. For more information on Energy Ranch or to
sign up, consult the TNMP Web site (www.tnpe.com) or call 1-866-GO-4-WIND.
Texas-New Mexico Power Company provides community-based electric service
to 85 communities and more than 238,000 customers in Texas and New Mexico.
Cielo Power Market is an affiliate of Cielo Wind Power, LLC, the leading
wind developer in the state, and has the state's largest development staff
dedicated solely to cost-effective and environmentally responsible wind ranch
development. Cielo Wind Power, LLC is a privately held company based in
