Toyota Celebrates 500,000 Certified Used Vehicle Sales

Apr 05, 2001, 01:00 ET from Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

    AUBURN, Maine, April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- In celebration of a half-million
certified used vehicle sales, Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today
presented customer James Allen with a check refunding the purchase price of
his 1998 Toyota Camry, which was the milestone 500,000th Toyota Certified Used
vehicle sold. The presentation was made to Allen here at Emerson Toyota.
In addition to the refund for the Georgetown, Ky.-built Camry, Allen, a
retired schoolteacher from Winthrop, Maine, received a complimentary bumper-
to-bumper 100,000-mile Certified Vehicle Service Agreement and a Toyota Auto
Care policy which provides three years of free scheduled maintenance at any
 authorized Toyota dealership.
"Praise about the Camry through word-of-mouth is what led me to Emerson
Toyota," said Allen, a first-time Toyota buyer. "The certified used vehicle
warranty, the peace of mind that comes with roadside assistance and the
excellent service at the dealership is what led me to the purchase."
Allen, who taught business classes and also served as co-chair in the
business department at Lewiston Regional Technical Center in Auburn, Maine,
had never owned an import-brand before purchasing the Camry. He was in the
market for a used vehicle and shopped other brands, but was attracted to
Camry's reputation for quality and the Certified Used program "sold the deal."
Although retired, Allen keeps busy ice-skating or cross-country skiing and
doing part-time work for his son. By coincidence, his wife, Laurel, also a
schoolteacher, has the son of Emerson Toyota's owner in her preschool class at
 Temple Shalom Nursery in Auburn.
The Toyota Certified Used Vehicle program, established in 1996, continues
to provide one of the best pre-owned warranties in the industry. The
warranty, from date of first use when sold as new, includes six-year,
100,000-mile limited powertrain coverage, as well as an optional comprehensive
100,000-mile vehicle service agreement. And, 24-hour roadside assistance also
is provided for one full year.
All 1996-2001 models with less than 65,000 miles are eligible for the
program. A vehicle history report is run on each vehicle before it is
approved for certification. Each vehicle prior to sale then receives a
rigorous 128-point inspection of all mechanical and safety functions, as well
as overall appearance considerations. The Prius electric/hybrid sedan, which
also is eligible for certification, receives an additional 15-point inspection
 of its hybrid components.
"Toyota is changing the way the used vehicle industry does business," said
Ron Broughman, TMS corporate manager, used vehicle operations department.
"This milestone achievement, along with our stringent certification process,
proves the best new cars that make the best used cars come from Toyota."
Broughman noted that the used vehicle market remains steady at about
41 million units a year, approximately two and a half times the size of the
new vehicle market. For 2001, the new-car market is expected to be a little
 over 16 million units.
"That's why more and more consumers are turning to certified used programs
like ours for quality vehicles and exceptional warranties, and why Toyota
sells more Certified Used vehicles than any other import-brand manufacturer,"
 added Broughman.
