Tyco Healthcare Unit Announces New Cancer Treatment Procedure

Apr 10, 2001, 01:00 ET from Tyco International Ltd.

BURLINGTON, Mass., April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Tyco Healthcare, a unit of
Tyco International Ltd. (NYSE: TYC; LSE: TYI; BSX: TYC), today announced that
its Radionics brand has introduced the Radionics XPlan(TM) IMRT (Intensity
Modulated Radiation Therapy) system for cancer treatment. The first
Stereotactic treatment in the United States with the MMLC (Micro Multi Leaf
Collimator) occurred at the Barrett Cancer Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. This
new technique is made possible by advanced hardware and software from
Radionics that will revolutionize treatment for patients suffering from most
types of cancer. The Radionics XPlan(TM) IMRT system features the fastest and
most versatile software and hardware of its kind on the market.
John Breneman, M.D., an attending Radiation Oncologist at the Barrett
Cancer Center and the Charles M. Barrett Professor of Radiation Oncology at
the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, said, "Stereotactic Intensity
Modulated Radiotherapy (Stereotactic IMRT) is a significant advance in the
ability to deliver radiation therapy with very high precision to tumors in the
head and neck. The combination of stereotactic localization and positioning
of a tumor, together with the ability of IMRT to precisely shape the radiation
field around the tumor permits us to use higher doses of radiation to tumors
while protecting sensitive, normal tissues that are close by. This will
presumably result in a higher chance of cure for some of these patients, along
with fewer risks from the therapy. The elegant implementation of this
technology by the Radionics XPlan(TM) system means that this technology should
be accessible to a large number of medical centers, making it available to
many patients who will benefit from its use."
The Radionics XPlan(TM) IMRT system offers the radiation therapy physician
and physicist increased flexibility in setting the beams from the
radiation-producing machine to treat patients with malignant diseases. The
system allows the total amount of radiation to be increased and precisely
aimed at the tumor while sparing more of the surrounding healthy and sensitive
tissue in a way that was not previously available. The future of XPlan(TM)
IMRT lies with the vision of the physician and physicist as they explore,
evaluate and confirm new areas to be treated with this revolutionary
technique. The XPlan(TM) IMRT system is a product resulting from on-going
research and development efforts at Radionics in collaboration with leading
 clinical institutions worldwide.
