UAW Questions Android Tax Abatement

PRESS CONFERENCE TODAY

MONDAY, APRIL 30, 2001

4:30 p.m. at the

OFFICES OF TRUMBULL COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

160 High Street, N.W., Warren, OH

Apr 30, 2001, 01:00 ET from UAW Region 2

WARREN, Ohio, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Region 2 Director and International
Executive Board member, Warren Davis plans to meet this afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
with the three County Commissioners of Trumbull County concerning the tax
abatement granted to Android Industries, which Davis questions the logic of.
Davis said, "The Trumbull County Commissioners appear to have rushed
through a huge tax abatement for a corporation that doesn't even exist in
Trumbull County." The union is studying what they know about the abatement and
intends to ask the commissioners to either reverse or hold this abatement in
abeyance until the community and families of Trumbull County, in particular
the 5300 members of the UAW and their families that reside in Trumbull County,
can ask questions about the appropriateness of this abatement.
Davis said, "School Board members must wonder why, during this critical
time for schools, the County Commissioners would grant a 95% corporate tax
break to Android Industries, when I, as well as UAW members, School Board
members and parents know that most of these abatements come right off the top
of what should be going to the schools. In most cases, 60% to 80% of the
abated taxes would be going to the schools."
Following the 3:30 meeting with the Commissioners, there will be a UAW
Press Conference in front of the Trumbull County Administration Building to
discuss with UAW members, interested citizens, politicians, and union members,
questioning the feasibility of the Trumbull County Commissioners, giving away
tax abatements on work that is already inside the G.M. Lordstown facility.
