NEW YORK, Nov. 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The United War Veterans Council (UWVC) is 'locked, loaded and ready' to kick-off "America's Parade," the 95th annual New York City Veterans Day Parade, the nation's largest celebration of service, on Tuesday, November 11. The Parade, which officially launches Toys for Tots this year, will begin with a memorial ceremony featuring, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, military leaders and other dignitaries at 10 a.m. in Madison Square Park, 23rd Street and Fifth Avenue, and proceeds up New York City's famed Fifth Avenue starting at 11:11 a.m.
Leading the parade as Grand Marshal is former New York Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, which is especially meaningful as the Marine Corps is the parade's featured service branch this year. Kelly will be joined by his wife, Veronica Kelly, a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve.
"With civic leaders, veterans, active military units and high school bands from more than 30 states participating, the Veterans Day Parade in New York City truly is 'America's Parade,'" said Vince McGowan, a Vietnam war veteran and President of the UWVC, which produces the Parade. "The Parade offers New Yorkers and America the ideal venue to honor and say 'Thank You' to the nation's vets for all that they do and the sacrifices they make."
The parade also features a U.S. Navy Harbor Security Boat "floating" up Fifth Avenue on a trailer and artist Scott LoBaido, who will paint an American Flag-themed work as his float moves up the avenue. More than 27,000 participants, including active military members, veterans of every U.S. war since World War II and marching bands from across the nation, will march up Fifth Avenue.
"America's Parade" will be broadcast live from noon to 3 p.m. on Veterans Day via FOX 5 in New York. On-air commentary for the Parade will be provided by Paul Bucha, Army Medal of Honor recipient from Vietnam and Veterans Advantage Advisory Board Member.
Fox's MyNetworkTV will also air a one-hour broadcast of parade highlights in New York City as well as Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Orlando/Daytona Beach, Phoenix and Washington D.C.
