PITTSBURGH, April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- To provide the public with an
extensive, up-to-date source of cancer information and services, the
University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) has launched a newly
redesigned website, http://www.upci.upmc.edu. The site offers one of the
region's richest sources of web-based cancer information from western
Pennsylvania's only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer
 center.
"This resource will enable the public, both individuals with cancer as
well as others, to learn more about the vast resources of UPCI," stated Henry
Lowe, M.D., director of the Benedum Oncology Informatics Center at UPCI.
"More consumers are choosing to learn about cancer and health from the Web and
make important healthcare decisions based on Web information. We expect that
UPCI's updated site will prove invaluable to them."
By entering the site, visitors can read the latest information on the
detection, diagnosis and treatment of various types of cancer. They also can
download descriptions of ongoing clinical trials. Moreover, they can pose
cancer-related questions and direct requests to schedule appointments to staff
of UPCI's Cancer Information and Referral Service (CIRS).
The website also provides information on various services available
through UPCI, as well as links to regional and national organizations,
including agencies that fund cancer research, numerous patient support groups
and online publishers of the latest cancer-related news.
UPCI's website also contains important information for western
Pennsylvania healthcare professionals, including a calendar of upcoming
scientific and educational programs, as well as extensive background on the
ongoing research initiatives of UPCI investigators.
Over time, the UPCI website will integrate additional features to expand
its content and improve its usability.
Development of the website was made possible through funding from the
Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation and the Emma Clyde Hodge Memorial Fund.
For more information about UPCI, please visit http://www.upci.upmc.edu or
