ATLANTA, Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- UPS Worldwide Logistics has signed an
agreement with ProAct International Ltd. to jointly develop supply chain
management software. The object-based software will make it possible for
user-companies to monitor and manage their entire logistics chain, especially
when the links are to outside vendors and partners who have different
 technology platforms.
UPS Worldwide Logistics, an independently managed and wholly owned
subsidiary of United Parcel Service, is a global provider of third-party
supply chain management solutions based in Atlanta. ProAct is a U.K.-based
software development company specializing in innovative supply chain
 applications.
The new supply chain management software will initially be available to
Worldwide Logistics customers during 1998. Some UPS Worldwide Logistics
customers are already using ProAct software to manage their logistics
operations. A typical application includes a variety of logistics operations,
such as the coordination of order processing, inventory management, warehouse
 operations and transportation management.
"This new venture will create a sophisticated, flexible set of software
'modules' that can be selected and customized to meet each customer's demand
for a unique seamless logistics system," said Ray Thurston, CEO of UPS
 Worldwide Logistics.
UPS Worldwide Logistics chose ProAct as its co-developer because of the
company's 16-year experience developing innovative solutions in the logistics
and warehousing environment. ProAct's extensive use of object-based
techniques also was appealing, since it can accommodate the widely-varying
needs of customers -- many of whom have logistics partners at a variety of
 sites with different technology platforms.
"This tools-based advanced software will provide our customers with a
single source of information linking many participants in an industry's
logistics chain. These kinds of solutions can actually revolutionize the
logistics processes of our clients, giving them more data to dramatically
lower logistics costs and improve customer service levels," said Thurston.
Established in 1993, UPS Worldwide Logistics is a third-party provider of
global supply chain management solutions, including inventory management,
logistics network design, distribution, transportation management, warehouse
operations, import and export optimization and reverse logistics. UPS
Worldwide Logistics is part of UPS Logistics Group, a wholly owned and
independently managed subsidiary of United Parcel Service.
