USA TODAY Baseball Weekly Features Tribute to Stargell, Stories on Jason Kendall and PNC Park

Apr 11, 2001, 01:00 ET from USA TODAY Baseball Weekly

WASHINGTON, April 11 /PRNewswire/ -- USA TODAY Baseball Weekly features a
tribute to Pittsburgh Pirate Willie Stargell in this week's edition. Stargell
passed away Monday, one day after the world got to see how the man known as
"Pops" would be immortalized in his adopted hometown.
Although Stargell never visited PNC Park, his memory will live on with a
bronze statue outside the new ballpark. Alongside the likenesses of Roberto
Clemente and Honus Wagner, Stargell will welcome fans to the newest stadium
 in Pittsburgh.
Three Rivers Stadium is now gone, only a few chunks of its artificial turf
remain in the Pirates' new batting tunnel. Although he did not see PNC
Park, Stargell attended the last game at Three Rivers Stadium, where it was
announced that his likeness would be erected at PNC Park.
The tribute is available now on BaseballWeekly.com at
http://baseballweekly.com and appears in this week's issue of USA TODAY
 Baseball Weekly on newsstands today.
Also in this week's issue, Pittsburgh catcher Jason Kendall and owner
Kevin McClathy look forward to playing and winning at PNC Park. The new
ballpark opened five years and a day after Kendall's and McClathy's first game
at Three Rivers Stadium -- where Willie Stargell was in charge.
