The United Steelworkers (USW) released the following statement today in support of President Obama's nominations of Dr. Ernest J. Moniz to head the Department of Energy (DOE) and Gina McCarthy to lead the Environmental Protection Agency.

PITTSBURGH, March 4, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- "The USW strongly endorses both of President Obama's nominees to lead our government's Energy and Environmental agencies. They are eminently qualified to work with his Administration in reducing climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions, recognizing the delicate balance between maintaining good manufacturing jobs and a clean environment," said USW International President Leo W. Gerard. "The USW encourages swift confirmation of both these nominees by the U.S. Senate."

"Dr. Moniz's wealth of experience working both inside and outside of Washington, D.C., should serve him well as Energy Secretary," said Gerard. "He knows that it not only is possible but essential that we have an energy policy that promotes good jobs and moves us toward energy independence while ensuring a cleaner environment. We look forward to working with him to move our nation's energy policy into the 21st century.

"Gina McCarthy is a long-established air quality expert, aptly fitted to work with manufacturers on reducing power plant emissions. Our union has enjoyed a good working relationship with Ms. McCarthy in her role as the head of the Office of Air and Radiation at the U.S. EPA, and we look forward to continue working with her as EPA Administrator."
